Rodaun was an independent community located where the Liesing leaves the Vienna Woods and enters the Vienna Basin. It was incorporated into Vienna in 1938 and further absorbed into the district of Liesing in 1958. It's autonomy survives today as one of Vienna's 89 cadastral communities. The center of Rodaun has been protected by the city government of Vienna for historic preservation.[1] It is home to Rodaun Castle. As of January 1, 2020 the area covering the cadastral of Rodaun had a population of 8,414.[2] [3][4]
The valley to Kaltenleutmachenwest in western Rodaun has been studied in detail in a number of geological publications because of its complicated geological structure.[5]
The first written mention of the place was around the year 1170 as Radune , around 1200 the name appears as Radovn . The name is of Slavic origin and probably comes from the personal name Radun.[6]
