Ronald D. Lawrence[1] (born June 13, 1992) is an American mixed martial artist currently competing in the Bantamweight division of Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Background[edit]
Lawrence started training at the age of 17, when he saw Kung Fu in the back room while lifting weights at a gym. Deciding to hit on one of the girlfriends of a fighter that was coming in, he got into a confrontation with the fighter and got kicked out of the gym. The Kung Fu instructor pulled him aside and invited him to one of his classes, where he was given gloves and sparred with a couple of guys.[4]
Mixed martial arts career[edit]
Early career[edit]
Making his MMA debut at Valor Fights 28, Ronnie defeated Josh Carter via first round TKO, going on to defeat his next two opponents in Brandon Webb and Adam Fritz.[5]
In his promotional debut, Lawrence faced Steve Garcia at Bellator 162 at October 21, 2016. He lost the fight via unanimous decision.[6]
At Hardrock MMA 105, he defeated Michael Ricketts via TKO in round one. For his only outing with Legacy Fighting Alliance at LFA 67, Lawrence defeated Garrett Armfield via unanimous decision.[5]
On the Dana White's Contender Series 31, he defeated Jose Johnson via unanimous decision, winning a UFC contract[7]
Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit]
Lawrence made his promotional debut against Vince Cachero at UFC Fight Night: Rozenstruik vs. Gane on February 27, 2021. He won the fight via third-round technical knockout.[8] This win earned him the Performance of the Night award.[9]
Ronnie Lawrence was schedued to face John Castañeda at UFC on ESPN: Hall vs. Strickland on July 30, 2021.[10] However on July 18, Castañeda pulled out of the bout and was replaced by Trevin Jones.[11] In turn, the bout was cancelled when Lawrence failed to show up for the weigh-ins due to health concerns.[12]
Ronnie faced Mana Martinez on February 12, 2022 at UFC 271. He won the bout via unanimous decision.[13] Lawrence revealed afterwards that he was dealing with a bout of diarrhea in the bout, hence why he used a wrestling heavy style in the bout.[14]
