Rory Sykes (born Callum Leeland Sykes; July 29, 1992[1]) is a British Inspirational Speaker, Entrepreneur and Philanthropist. He is probably best known as an inspirational speaker and for 'Callum's Cure' an autobiography written by his mother Shelley Sykes which in part details his early life.

Co-founder of Happy Charity.[2]

Early life

Rory was born at Airedale General Hospital in Steeton with Eastburn, West Yorkshire, England, the son of author Shelley Sykes and programmer Leigh Sykes. He was born with cerebral palsy and brain damage due to injuries he suffered in the womb when his mother was in a car accident; doctors said that he would spend his life in a wheelchair, unable to see or walk. He is a massive fan of Tom Hanks and credits the film Forrest Gump with giving him the inspiration to run, not just walk.[3][4][5][6][1][7][8][9]

He and his mother moved to Sydney, Australia when he was 9.[5][6][10] He attended St Mary's Cathedral College in Sydney, Australia, with Hunter Page-Lochard,[11][12] dropping out before receiving his School Certificate to focus more on building his consultancy businesses and public speaking. He later returned to education just long enough to receive a Record of School Achievement.

Career

In 2003 Rory and his mother Shelley Sykes raised money to take 69 kids and 5 adults from Youth off the Streets in Australia to Tony Robbins' Discovery Camp in San Diego where he and his mother were keynote speakers.[13][14] He helped lead Professional Speakers Australia (formerly, National Speakers Association Australia) Youth Leadership Program 2005—2010 working with special guests Edward de Bono and W Mitchell.

Personal life

Rory, his mother, and grandmother all share the same birthday, July 29, 1992, 1962 and 1944 respectively.[1] The Guinness World Record is currently for 4 generations born on the same day.[15] He changed his name in 2000 after an operation on his legs, in favor of his middle name, because, he says, "Rory doesn't have wobbly legs."[5][6]
