Rosa Maria Berardo (Monte Aprazível, 18th december 1961 1961), is a Brazilian photographer, professor, journalist, writer, producer and film maker, known for her production of photographic and filmic imagery related to culture, culture identity, gender and ethnicities.[1] She is quoted at the Brazillian Movies Dicionary [2](short and medium films) by Antônio Leão da Silva Neto, São Paulo, 2006.,[3] São Paulo, 2006. Her name is also mentioned at the website Virtual Women Library [4] as one of the Brazilian artists that stood out the most recognized in the areas of science, culture and communication during the last years.

Rosa Berardo was born in Monte Aprazível, São Paulo, the 18th December 1961. The daughter of Geraldo Berardo, who was a lawyer, elected 3 times as mayor of Monte Aprazível, Alderman and Deputy for São Paulo São Paulo.He was arrested during the Brazilian military dictatorship and Maria Rosa Berardo, graduated in the Letters Course from the Universidade Católica de Goiás, with a teacher degree. She has worked as teacher at Bandeirantes public college in Goiania for 26 years, where she taught Portuguese and English.

Rosa Berardo studied part of her fundamental studies at Feliciano Sales Cunha, in Monte Aprazível, where she lived until 1968 when her family moved to Goiânia, in the state of Goiás. She completed her childhood studies at Colégio São Judas Tadeu and went to high school at Colégio Santa Clara and finished at Colégio Objetivo, in Goiania.

In 1985 she graduated with a bachelor degree in Social Communication and Journalism (by the Federal University of Goiás) and dedicated the first years of her professional career to journalistic photography, making reports on Latin American countries, Amazônia, Xingu's National Park, Pantanal, Psychiatric Asylum Adauto Botelho, Cavalhadas, Congadas and Brazillian Afro culture (1985-1992).

Fouder of the first Cinema School of Goiás, SKOPOS [5] (in partnership with Video producer Cara Video) in the year of 2001. SKOPOS graduated its fair share of actual film-makers from Goiás: Simone Caetano,[6] Joelma Paes, Marcio Vinicius, Carlos Cipriano, Sergio Valério, Anselmo Troncoso, Juan Monier, Amarildo Pessoa, André Pimenta and others.

In 2011 she created Maison du Cinema, (Casa Do Cinema[7]), a studio for learning of cinema's theory and practice, with a semester course of 180 hours to emphasizes the realization of fiction short-films, documentaries and Stop Motion animation. The school graduated six classes of 20 students each and realized six short-films scripted and directed by students during the course under the supervision of Rosa as a professor.

Many students that went through the Maison du Cinema achieved careers in Audiovisual production for short-films and webseries and currently occupy senior positions in Goiania's audiovisual production. Through the state's cultural fund law and Goyazes law, she was created projects for cinema courses at the city of Goiás and Anicuns.

In 2014 she created in Goiás the course CINE EDUCAÇÃO[8](cine-education), in partnership with Federal Institute for education in Goiás - IFG, the Goiás Town Hall and the International Environmental Film Festival - FICA, for the community, resulting in the realization of a fiction short-film about the childhood of the character Maria Grampinho.[9] The script was written and directed by a 16 years old student Mariana Siqueira, under the supervision and coordination of Rosa Berardo. The goal of this initiative was the regionalization of movie-making in the state and the capacitation of those who live in small towns to express themselves through image in movement.

  • 2005 a 2006 - Post-doctorate in Social Sciences and Cinema at the Universite du Quebec a Montreal - UQAM, Canada Scholarship from CAPES.

  • 1990 – ANDRÉ LOUCO[10] – Short film shot with 35mm sheets at the city of Goiás. Adaptation from the writer Bernardo Elis, born in Goiânia. Awarded at the Movie Festival of Locarno, Switzerland, exhibited in Gramado at the Rio Cine Festival and the Sound and Image Museum of São Paulo.
  • 2007 – SEMANA SANTA EM GOIÁS – Documentary shot at the city of Goiás, where all the preparations, rehearsals and accomplishment of the religious activities of the Semana Santa (Holy Week) were filmed. Her crew stayed at the city of Goiás for 10 days interviewing participants and the responsible for this cultural event and recording images of the diverse religious manifestations that occurred on a daily basis. Film exhibited at the movie festival - Goiânia mostra curtas 2007,[11] and at the choir meeting in goiás under the guidance of maestro Sebastião Curado. This movie also presents images and interviews about the work and the museum of Cora Coralina, as well as interviews with its director, Marlene Velasco.
  • 2007 – ROMARIA DO VÃO DO MOLEQUE[12] – Documentary made with the ethnic group Kalunga at the region of Cavalcante. During 8 days her crew stayed at the Romaria's surroundings recording interviews and images of the participants and also all of the preparation stages and accomplishment of the traditional cultural manifestations. Work commissioned by SEBRAE GOIAS. Direction, recording and DVD authoring with 2 minutes of edited material in portuguese and english.
  • 2008 – CAÇADA DA RAINHA Documentary shot at the city of Cavalcante de Goiás. During 7 days her crew stayed at the spot of the Caçada da Rainha manifestation, recording interviews and images of the participants as well as all the other stages of preparation and accomplishment of the traditional cultural manifestations. Work commissioned by SEBRAE GOIAS.
  • 2009 – II ENCONTRO AFRO DE GOIAS Documentation of the II Black Culture meeting in Goiás under the coordination of SEBRAE GOIAS. Direction, recording and DVD authoring with 20 minutes of edited material in portuguese and english.
  • 2009 – ROMARIA DO MUQUEM –Documentary about all history of the Romaria do Muquém and also documentation of the Romaria in the year of 2009. Commissioned by SEBRAE GOIÁS.
  • 2009 – HIP-HOP[13] - Documentary about Hip-Hop in Goiania and its social and cultural importance.

  • 2010 – TOMBAMENTO DA PONTE PÊNSIL AFONSO PENA – commission: IPHAN Goiás. Documentary about the history of the suspension bridge Afonso Pena, with the use of documental imagery, archive images, photos, 3D animation and interviews. Photography director.
  • 2010 – ROMÃOZINHO[14] – Winner of best fiction script at the FestCine Goiânia. Movie adapted from a popular legend about the character Romãozinho
  • 2011 – FESTIVAL ABC DA BOA MESA– Documentary shot at the region of Cristalina about the production of garlic, potatoes and onions and the recovery of traditional and regional recipes made with those ingredients. Client SEBRAE GOIAS.
  • 2012 – A DOENÇA DE FABRÍCIO Photography direction. Fiction short film that takes place and was recorded at the city of Goiás in may 2012.
  • 2012 – UM SOL DE JACARÉ[15] Fiction short film, winner of best script at the Municipal Secretary of Culture of Goiânia in 2011. Selected for the festivals of Florianópolis, 2012, Paraíba 2012.
  • 2012 – Travessia[16] - Short fiction based on real events. It tells the story of a peasant family and the strange relationship between them. Psychoanalytic film..
  • 2013 – A Infância de Aninha[17] - Animation film based on the poems of the writer Cora Coralina, who reconstitutes her childhood with a focus on her family and social relationship in the city of Goiás.
  • 2015 – A CHEGADA DE ANINHA[18] – Short animation film about the childhood of Cora Coralina. It is inspired by her book Vintém de Cobre and tells of details of the economic difficulties and also of the family rejection to which the writer was subjected during her childhood.
  • 2015 – OS MENINOS VERDES Short animated film adapted from the work of the writer Cora Coralina. The movie talks about little green creatures that show in the writer's garden and become national news.

Universidade Federal de Goiás[edit]

At the present, Rosa Berardo is an Associated Professor 3, at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG). She is experienced in the area of Arts, History and Moviemaking techniques for fiction, animation and documentaries and specialized in the fields of photography, cinema, animation, cultural identity, education and social differences. In UFG she ministers the disciplines of Photography, Cinema and Animation and advises students in master and doctorate programs at the Arts and Visual Culture program at the Visual Arts College.[20]

  • 2011 Award from Lei Goyazes for making a feature film script. The developing project for a feature film script arrived at the hands of the city governor, inspired in the romance of Bernardo Elis, it was approved at Lei Goyazes.
  • 2012 - Jaburu[22] medal, as homage from the Cultural State Council, for the services provided to the State of Goiás in the audiovisual area.
