Personal life
Roshan Upadhaya was born on 5 August 1993 in Miao, Arunachal Pradesh to Sri Veshraj Upadhaya and Smti. Damayanti Upadhaya.[2] He completed his schooling from a Govt. H.S. School from Miao and was recruited as a constable in 2012 in Arunachal Police. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Commerce from Jawaharlal Nehru College, Pasighat.[1][4][3]
Career
In 2012, Upadhaya got a government job. He was recruited in Arunachal police force as a constable while pursuing his graduation.[4] But during his last semester, he was hospitalized for more than a month, due to which he started getting depression and anxiety attacks. So he started spending time in the forests, letting nature heal him.[5] In the forests he saw butterflies and his area of interest developed. He started capturing and documenting the photos of the butterflies. He then ventured in the research works and discovered new species of butterflies.
He recorded many rare and previously unspotted butterflies and dragonflies. Some of the species are Striped Hairstreak, Atratothemis reelsi, Elusive Prince, Spotted Yellow Lancer and Veined Palmer.[2][5]
Due to his contribution in the study of the butterflies, Arunachal Pradesh's people and media named him the Butterfly Man of Arunachal Pradesh.[4][5]
Upadhaya is not only a police officer but also a martial artist. He started his karate academy in his home town of Miao to teach children self-defense. His academy is affiliated with the Indian Olympic Association which is managed by his wife, Himadri Acharyya, a black belt in karate and kickboxing.[4][5] Upadhaya is also a parkour trainer (a form of martial art). He was the coach of the Indian parkour team in an international event in Nepal.[4]

Upadhaya holds the Indian and Asian record of being photographed with the most butterfly species on his body, for which he received a certificate from India Book of Records, Asia Book of Records in 2019. He was also conferred with an honorary degree of PhD in Record Breaking by World Records University.[1][2][3][5][6]
In 2019, Upadhaya won a photography competition organized by WWF India for which he received class-1 commendation certificate from DGP, Arunachal Pradesh.[5]
