"Royal Event" is a single by pianist Russ Conway which reached number 15 in the UK Singles Chart on 9 March 1960 and remained on the charts for nine weeks.[1]
Conway composed the tune under his real name of Trevor Stanford at the request of his agent Richard Armitage, under the title 'The Royal March'. The original intention had been to produce a composition to celebrate the opening of the Theatre Royal in Lowestoft on 8 February.
The tune was originally recorded on 22 January 1960 in Studio Two at Abbey Road, but a second session, on 31 January, was the one which produced the recording as released on 19 February. The original recording has since been released on a number of compilation albums.[2]
The record caused a degree of controversy upon its release due to its name: it had been released on the birth date of Prince Andrew. Radio personality Pete Murray refused to play the record, saying he thought 'the disc is in the worst possible taste'.[2]
