The Royal Naval Dental Services (RNDS) is a former separate division of the Royal Navy that provided dental care, and is now a less-independent component within DDS.

History[edit]

The Royal Naval Medical Service was founded in 1917. Naval Dental Services was created on 22 January 1920 as the Royal Navy Dental Branch. The Army dental component would be formed in 1921 and that of the RAF in 1930.[1]

The General Dental Council was formed in 1956. In April 1964 the Ministry of Defence was formed.

In the drastic (and not implemented) 1981 Defence White Paper, it proposed significant cuts for the Navy. Dental officers would be reduced from around 100 to 80.[2] The Falklands War prevented the 1981 White Paper from being implemented. In the Falklands War, 14 naval dental officers were on board surface ships.

Amalgamation[edit]

Defence Dental Service (DDS) was formed in January 1985, within the Defence Medical Services (DMS).

It became part of the Defence Dental Agency in Buckinghamshire in March 1996.

Structure[edit]

The headquarters of Royal Naval Dental Services moved from London in April 1994.

Work by the RNDS is featured in the Journal of the Royal Naval Medical Service.

Training[edit]

The Defence Dental School is part of the Defence Medical Academy.

Officer recruits can be aged 17-54, and dental nurses from 17-39. Officers have 15 weeks at BRNC.
