    History[edit]

RushFiles was founded in 2012 by a group of technology investors who discovered a great need for corporate employees and partners to easily and securely access corporate data from computers and mobile devices.[2] In the same year, RushFiles went to market with its secure cloud storage solution. The company has since extended its operations significantly around the world through its network of Partners.

The company raised €2.5 million (DKK 19mllion) around 2014 from Insero, Vækstfonden, and North-East Venture. [2]

RushFiles was part of the Accelerace [3] accelerator program and is one of more than 500 companies that have already been accelerated.

    Technology[edit]

RushFiles encrypts all files using AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) with a 256-bit key. AES is a symmetric block cipher chosen to protect classified information and is implemented throughout the world to encrypt sensitive data. RushFiles use private generated keys for each of the companies using their solution. All files and folders are obfuscated by not using the original name and mime type so that files can’t be discovered. Also, the file and folder structure are secured in a database and the files are not stored in the same structure on disk to obfuscate even more. The purpose of encryption at the server level would be to prohibit the server administrator from accessing the file content.

RushFiles offers two client applications for two of the most popular OS, i.e. Windows and macOS. The desktop application enables users to perform operations on files as they would be on their local machine with the advantage of permanently having their files in sync and shared with others. RushFiles’ desktop applications achieve this by mounting a virtual drive to their machine, so users can navigate through their Shares using the File Explorer (for Windows) or the Finder for the MacOS version.

The shares content and folder structure are stored in a local database on the user’s machine, however, files are downloaded only on-demand in a local cache. The local cache retention period is customizable in the application, so the user can choose for how much time they want to locally have their files available.

When working on files using the File Explorer (for Windows) or Finder (MacOS), all changes to files are transferred to the servers. Also, users will receive updates from other users for the files they are sharing, ensuring documents are always in sync between users.

Users can also use the Web Client and mobile clients to access their files as an alternative.

When editing a file, a new version of the file is created and stored on servers. This enables users to have access to several versions of the files and recover a previous version if found necessary. The number of versions that a file can have is a customizable setting at a company level. The maximum allowed number of versions is 999.

RushFiles takes advantage of the versioning system for files and offers a Ransomware recovery capability. In case there was an attack in a user’s company, all files can be restored to a working version so they can continue accessing and working on their files. In case users encounter an unfortunate event, they can simply contact their company administrator to help them gain access to their files again.
