Directus is a free and open-source headless CMS and content as a service platform for managing custom SQL databases. It consists of a web app for non-technical users to manage content[3] and an API[4] that allows software developers to connect that authored data to websites, native apps, kiosks, IoT devices, or any other data-driven project[5].
History
Directus was first released in 2006 as a Flash-based asset and database GUI under the working title "dir". Subsequent versions were written in PHP and focused on creating a headless CMS for custom databases[6]. Version 6 was rewritten from the ground up as a backbone.js web app[7] – with the server side decoupled to allow for easier porting to other languages[8].
Licensing
Distributed under the GNU General Public License, Directus is open source software that can be self-hosted for free by anyone[9]. While formally managed by RANGER Studio in Brooklyn[8], NY, Directus has contributors worldwide that help maintain the codebase.
