Russian Library-Bibliographical Classification

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

BBK (Bibliotechno-Bibliograficheskaya Klassifikatsiya), or Library-Bibliographical Classification (LBC), is a Russian library classification system, created in the Soviet Union (the first edition appearing over the period 1960-1968) and developed from the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) with the aim of replacing it.[1] Since 2000 it has been managed by the Russian State Library, National Library of Russia and Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Its system is alphadecimal. Each of the 28 classes is assigned a letter of the Cyrillic alphabet, and this letter is followed by numbers expressed in decimal fractions in a manner similar to that of the UDC.

It is still in use in many libraries of the former Soviet bloc, sometimes in an adapted form.
