Rusty Lake is a Dutch indie video game developer studio founded in spring 2015 by Robin Ras and Maarten Loise.

Prior to the founding of the studio, in 2013, Robin and Maarten decided to develop Samsara Room as an indie video game.[1]

In spring 2015, Robin and Maarten, inspired by David Lynch's Twin Peaks,[2][3] started to release free surrealistic room escape games for Android and iOS, creating the Cube Escape series[4]. Following in the same year they started to release premium games, creating the Rusty Lake series.[5] Every game is in some way connected, adding to the mystery of the Rusty Lake, and follows detective Dale Vandermeer and his investigation into the death of Laura Vanderboom.

As of June 2021, there have been ten mainline games, five spin-offs and a collection[4] released. Music for the games is by Victor Butzelaar, with the exception of Cube Escape: Seasons, by Kevin Macleod.[6] In June 2017, the Cube Escape series had reached 3 million views on its official site[7] and 2 million on Kongregate.[8]

Gameplay

Cube Escape's gameplay involves the player navigating cubical rooms using point-and-click controls and collecting items and clues to help them escape. Premium games, such as Rusty Lake: Roots, have similar gameplay, although they aren't always developed as cubical rooms.
