Several stars such as John Cena, Batista, Randy Orton and Lesnar made their debuts during that period while the likes of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and The Rock would leave the company, the latter for a very successful film and television career. The Women's Division featured stars such as Trish Stratus and Lita while the WWE Diva Search began back in 2003 and produced eventual winners Jaime Knoppe, Christy Hemme, Ashley Massaro, Layla and Eve Torres.

After the company transitioned into its Ruthless Aggression era, this period still featured many elements of its predecessor the Attitude Era, including the levels of violence, sex, and profanity, but there was less politically incorrect content, and a further emphasis on wrestling was showcased.[4]

CM Punk made his debut in 2006 and would become very popular with fans due to his wrestling ability and his unconventional look which included piercings and tattoos. He would win the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 24 when he defeated Shelton Benjamin, Chris Jericho, Carlito, Montel Vontavious Porter, John Morrison and Mr. Kennedy. CM Punk would later cash in his briefcase on the June 30, 2008 episode of RAW where he defeated then-World Heavyweight Champion Edge for the title.

The final pay-per-view event to receive a TV-14 rating was The Great American Bash in 2008, where Triple H retained the WWE Championship against Edge in the main event. Following the event, WWE shifted to TV-PG, family-friendly programming, thus, officially ending the Ruthless Aggression Era in the process.[5]

Money in the Bank[edit]

The Ruthless Aggression Era also saw the debut of the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 21 in which Edge defeated Christian, Kane, Chris Benoit and Shelton Benjamin. Winning the Money in the Bank ladder match would later elevate future stars such as CM Punk, The Miz, Jack Swagger, Daniel Bryan and Seth Rollins to megastardom.

Return of ECW[edit]

Paul Heyman, the owner of ECW

WWE announced the return of ECW on May 26, 2006, which began airing on SyFy on June 13, 2006. The Superstars were known as Extremists while the Divas were known as Vixens. Paul Heyman would serve as GM of ECW from June 2006 to December 2006 after the dismal performance of the December to Dismember pay-per-view prompted Heyman to leave the company.
