Ruva Ngwenya

Ruva Ngwenya is an Australian theatre performer, actor and singer.[1]. Ngwenya has performed in numerous musical shows including The Lion King in 2013-2016, Beautiful: the Carole King Musical in 2017-18, and Moulin Rouge! The Musical in 2021[2]. In 2023, the show TINA: The Tina Turner Musical opened at the Theatre Royal Sydney with Ngwenya performing the lead role of Tina Turner[3]. Ngwenya is also a RnB and pop music singer. Her most recent single "Bad Boi" was released in 2019[4]. She also appeared in the television show Neighbours as Bonnie Louden in 2020.

Life and Career[edit]

Ruva Ngwenya (full name: Ruvarashe) was born in Essendon, Melbourne and has Zimbabwean heritage. Her music influences growing up included Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Tina Turner and multiple African musicians. Ngwenya studied at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS) and The University of Melbourne Victorian College of the Arts.[3]

2013 - 2016: The Lion King Musical[edit]

Ngwenga first performed on-stage professionally in the Australian tour of Disney's The Lion King[5][2]. The experience led Ngwenya to pursue a career in theatre. The Lion King is listed in the Guinness World Records as the highest-grossing musical of all time[6]

2017: The Voice TV Series[edit]

At the age of twenty-four, Ngwenya appeared as a contestant in the reality television series The Voice Australia, Season 6[7]. Performing the song "Hello" by Adele[8], Ngwenya drew the attention of The Voice judge Kelly Rowland and joined her team[9]. Fellow judge Seal then exercised a steal in a later episode. Ngwenya was eliminated from the show after losing to contestant Rennie Adams in a battle round.

2023: The Tina Turner Musical[edit]

The first Australian tour of The Tina Turner Musical opened in May 2023 at the Theatre Royal Sydney. In the show, Ngwenya performs the lead role of Tina Turner and sings the artist's hit songs "What's Love Got To Do With It?", "The Best", "River Deep-Mountain High" and "Proud Mary"[10]. Fellow cast members include Tim Omaji as Ike Turner, Ibinabo Jack and Jayme-Lee Hanekom. Tina Turner passed away shortly after the Australian show opened.[11]
