Ryan C. Matthews (born December 8, 1980) is an American author, dog trainer, speaker and a Veteran of the United States Army.[1][2]

Early life and carrer[edit]

Ryan Matthews was born on December 8, 1980, in Huntington Beach, California. In 2000, Matthews enlisted in the United States Army, becoming part of the Military Police Corps. While on deployment in Croatia, Matthews was inspired to work with canines when he saw a Military Working Dog for the first time. In 2002, Matthews graduated from the Military Working Dog Handlers Course at Lackland Air Force Base and worked with Military canines for the remainder of his time in the Army (2002-2006.)[3][4][5]

While serving in the United States Army, Matthews was selected to become certified from the United States Army Military Police School Special Reaction Team (Army SWAT) Course, performed bite protection training, bomb threat sweeps, and secret service missions. Ryan extended his time in service so he could volunteer for a combat deployment to Mosul, Iraq with his Military Working Dog, Zito F469. He worked with Special Forces and Infantry units, and after his combat deployment, received an honorable discharge from the Army.[6][7][8][9][10]
