Internet career and content
2008–2017: Comedy sketches on YouTube
Ryan George joined YouTube on December 11, 2008. His comedy sketches mainly revolve around highlighting the absurdities of everyday situations, media, and issues. His serial sketches include "The First Guy to Ever," which centers on an imagined situation around the first person to invent a profession or action, and "How _____ Got Their Names," centering on imagined conferences to decide the names of everyday objects.[2] Except when collaborating with other YouTubers, George mostly plays all the characters in different outfits,[2] behind a green screen.[3] George's main channel has over one million subscribers.[2]
2017–present: Pitch Meeting and other collaborations
One of George's most popular sketches is Pitch Meeting. Commissioned by Screen Rant in 2017, Pitch Meeting features George playing two characters, the writer and the executive, in an imagined Hollywood pitch meeting. Whilst pitching the movie, the writer narrates its plot, unintentionally highlighting its flaws, illogicalities, and plot holes. Regardless, the executive overenthusiastically approves the production of the movie.[1][3][4] Pitch Meeting usually features popular films and franchises, including superhero movies such as Justice League (2017), and others, like The Matrix (1999)[1] and the Telugu film RRR (2022).[5] Pitch Meeting has more than 250 million combined views. Although it was hosted on Screen Rant's YouTube channel,[1] it now has its own.[2]
George said that he was inspired to create the series after watching stand-up comedian John Mulaney describe his experience rewatching Back to the Future (1985) as an adult. Rahel Philipose of The Indian Express praised Pitch Meeting's fast-paced humor and dialogue, saying that it "successfully deconstructs some of the biggest blockbusters of the last two decades."[1] In 2021, the series was featured by The New York Times Arts editor Mekado Murphy in a weekly column.[4]
In 2019, Ryan George tweeted about his experience after a theatre accidentally played the horror film La Llorona instead of Detective Pikachu, with the majority of the audience being children. The incident was reported by Gizmodo.[6] In 2020, George collaborated with fellow Canadian YouTuber Julie Nolke in two related sketches on the "first couple to ever get" married and divorced.[7] In 2022, George collaborated with Canadian actor Simu Liu, best known as the lead in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), for a sketch celebrating three hundred episodes of Pitch Meeting.[8]
