Ryan J. Downey (born November 7, 1973) is an American musician, journalist, band manager, and author who was born in Indianapolis, Indiana.[1] Downey was the vocalist in Burn It Down[2] and founded Superhero Artist Management,[3] Downey has worked as a writer, reporter, producer, editor, and host for a number of media outlets, including MTV,[4] MSNBC,[5] The Hollywood Reporter, and Hearst Communications.[6]

He is the author of two books: They Don't Need to Understand (2020), with Andy Biersack,[7] and I Can Explain (2022), with Ronnie Radke.[8]

History

Ryan Downey was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. In high school, he published fanzines, put on local shows, and sang for the straight-edge hardcore band Hardball.[9] He co-founded Burn It Down in 1997, around the same time he began contributing to various rock music publications. Burn It Down released two EPs, a split-EP with the band Racetraitor, and a single full-length album, before disbanding in 2000 while on tour with In Flames.[10] During the band's tenure, he continued to work as a journalist. Downey moved to California in 2001 and briefly fronted Time in Malta.[11] He is the former Senior Editor for Alternative Press.[12]
