Ryang Myong-il (Hangul: 량명일; born 31 July 1987) is a North Korean former footballer. He represented North Korea on at least eleven occasions between 2003 and 2010, scoring once.[1]
Club career[edit]
In the 2009 season, with midfielder Wu Bo returning to China from Hungarian side Ferencvárosi, an affiliate of Chengdu Blades, Chengdu Blades manager Li Bing opted to bring in Ryang to help balance the midfield.[2] Despite Chengdu Blades' coaching team initially having high hopes for Ryang, he left the side at the end of the season after seven appearances, returning to North Korea with Wolmido.[3]
International career[edit]
Ryang was first called up to the North Korea national team for the 2003 King's Cup in Thailand at the age of sixteen. He helped North Korea to the final, where they were beaten comprehensively by Sweden. He continued to be called up throughout the early 2000s, and after North Korea's qualification to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, he stated in an interview that he hoped to have the opportunity to compete at the tournament.[4]
Personal life[edit]
Ryang and fellow North Korean international Kim Yong-jun, who also played for Chengdu Blades, have defended North Korea's treatment of international footballers, with both stating that they were well taken care of and had little need for money, as all of their training equipment was paid for them, with some players being given homes by the DPR Korea Football Association.[5]
