Sàndor (Alexandru) Ausch (February 2, 1922 - January 22, 2014),[1] served as the secretary [2] (and later, president) [3] of the Jewish Community from Târgu Mureș.
He has been recognized by various governments for his work leading and support the Jewish community in Târgu Mureș and throughout the rest of Transilvania, including with one knight hood from each of the governments of Romania ("Ordinul "Meritul Industrial și Comercial": în grad de Cavaler", Orders, decorations, and medals of Romania), awarded by Romanian president Traian Basescu on the anniversary of "Zilei Holocaustului" (Holocaust Day),[4] on October 8, 2009,[5][6][7] and Hungary - Knight of the Hungarian Order of Merit, granted by the László Sólyom to Sándor Ausch on March 15, 2007.[8][9]
Biography[edit]
Born in Deva on Feb 2, 1922, Sandor was educated in Deva, Târgu Mureș and Cluj-Napoca. During WWII, he spent approximately 2 years at a labor camp in Tasnad. Following an escape, he was imprisoned by Russian forces and kept for 4 years - 2 years on the Crimean peninsula, and 2 years in Odessa.[1]
He was recognized for his efforts as an active member and leader of the Jewish community in Targu Mures, with active contributions spanning 1984-2011 (including as president/chairman between 2005 and 2011), remaining involved part time as Honorary Chairman past his retirement in 2011 [1]
Statue by Marton Iszak[edit]
Inaugurated in May 2003, Sàndor fundraised for and lobbied for the creation of a holocaust memorial statue, based on designs from Márton Izsák.[10]
Renovations/restoration of Transilvanian synagogues[edit]
Working closely with Bernath Sauber his best friend and the then president of the community, Sàndor championed, fundraised for and oversaw the renovation work performed between 1998 - 2000 on the Status Quo Ante Synagogue (Târgu Mureș).[2] In his capacity, variously, as councilor, secretary and eventually president and chairman of the local community (with Teodor Schwartz as vice president),[11] he also saved from demolition and then rehabilitated synagogues in Târnăveni, Gheorgheni and Sighișoara.[1]
As one of the few remaining community members who remembered the required rituals, Sàndor officiated various high holidays in the synagogue - at first, alternating with his old friend Bernath Sauber, and, after Bernath's passing, performing the ceremonies and rituals on his own.[12] He continuously acted as a public face for the regional community, serving as a public facing source of historical perspective on anniversaries and events related to the local Jewish community.[13][14][15][1][16] As a result, the non-Jewish, larger community of the city, often referred to Sandor as the "rabi" [17]
Târgu Mureș Trust[edit]
The Târgu Mureș Trust is a Scottish charity fund established in the year 2000 by Ethne Woldman.[18][19] As part of his duties with the local community, Sàndor helped (as part of a larger committee of 3 trustees) administer and oversee the distribution of payments from the fund - providing social and community assistance (subsidies for cost of rent, glasses, food and medicine [20]) to as many as 200 former inmates of Auschwitz and other Nazi death camps. He also acted as host and guide for occasional visitors from Glasgow and elsewhere, touring and providing historical context for local remnants of the Holocaust.[21]
