Sĩ Phú (1940 - 2000) is a famous Vietnamese singer, who is known for his warm and especially inspirational voice - although he had never claimed himself to be a professional singer.

Biography[edit]

Sĩ Phú was born on January 9, 1940 in Bonneng Thakhet, Laos.

He migrated to South Vietnam with his family in 1954, and lived in Saigon until 1975. He graduated from high school at the age of 16 and entered the University of Science.

At the age of 18, he was already a secondary school teacher, who taught mathematics and physics at two high schools, La San Nghĩa Thục and Thăng Long in Saigon.

Military activities[edit]

Sĩ Phú was an officer of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. He joined the Air Force in 1962 and held the rank of major. In 1968, Sĩ Phú began his singing career when he performed a song on television to celebrate the anniversary of the Air Force.

Career in singing[edit]

After a while, Sĩ Phú became famous for his romantic love songs - including "Tà áo xanh", "Trở về bến mơ", "Em tôi", "Hoài cảm", "Cô láng giềng", "Mắt biếc", "Chuyện tình buồn", "Niệm khúc cuối", "Chiếc lá cuối cùng"...

Despite his popularity, Sĩ Phú considered singing to be only a side job, and rarely appeared in concert stages or discos. However he often performed in music programs held at the Air Force's club at Tan Son Nhat airport.

Migration[edit]

In 1975, Sĩ Phú left Vietnam to migrate to the United States. He graduated as a telecommunications engineer and worked full-time for an American company. At that time, he was living with singer Uyên Ly.[1]

During his time overseas, he had performed at various places in Canada, Australia, France, Belgium... For about 10 years, Sĩ Phú hardly participated in any art activities. He later shared in an interview by Nam Lộc on Vietnam Television and Arts that because of his daughter's death in 1983, he was so depressed that he "left his job and didn't want to sing anymore, as his heart was overwhelmed by grief."[2] In 1995, he re-appeared on a program produced by Trường Thanh Center and published two CDs (Tà áo xanh and Trái tim hững hờ).

He died on July 19, 2000 at UCI Hospital, Southern California from lung cancer. Three weeks before his death, Sĩ Phú had released his last CD, Còn chút gì để nhớ, at the Majestic discotheque in Southern California.

After his death, his fiancé Ngọc Lan (not to be confused with singer Ngọc Lan) wrote a memoir named Biết bao giờ nguôi.[3]
