S.K.R College[lower-alpha 1], officially Shri Krishna Ramruchi College is a government college located in Barbigha, Bihar, India.[1] At the time of its establishment in 1955, it was one of the very few higher education institutions in the state and the only higher education institution in the town.[2] In December 2024, the college received funding of ₹ 5 crores under the PM-USHA Scheme to enhance its academic and infrastructural facilities.[3] By February 2025, Dr. Rajmanohar Kumar became temporary principal of the college after the retirement of Dr. Nawal Prasad.[4] On 12 July 2025, Prof. Sanjay Kumar was appointed principal of the college.[5][6]
History
The college was founded in 1955 by Krishna Mohan Pyare Singh (commonly known as Lala Babu), a freedom fighter and the first MLA of Barbigha. The college is named in honor of Shri Krishna Singh, the first Chief Minister of Bihar and his wife Ramruchi Devi.[7][8][9][10]
Originally a constituent unit of Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University, S.K.R College became affiliated with Munger University after the bifurcation of the former in 2018.[11]
Campus
The college offers degrees across various disciplines in the streams of Arts, Science, and Commerce. However, it operates as a "dummy college," where regular classes are not conducted like many other colleges in the country but it serves as an examination center for various assessments,[12][13] including those for Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)[14] and the Bihar Board,[15] as well as hosting other programs.[16][17]
S.K.R College features a large open playground that is utilized by the local community for sports, jogging, driver training, and political rallies,[18] in addition to hosting other events such as cricket tournaments.[19]
Controversy
On the night of 25 January, a group of approximately 10–15 people attacked students residing in the Ambedkar Hostel of this college. According to a first information report (FIR) lodged at Barbigha police station by hostel resident Roushan Kumar, the attackers arrived armed with sticks and other weapons, verbally abused the students, assaulted them, and opened fire, resulting in injuries to several residents. At the time of the incident, the students were preparing for Republic Day celebrations.
Police who reached the scene recovered one live 7.65 mm cartridge and two empty cartridge cases near the hostel. An FIR was registered against Ankit Singh, a resident of Koyribigha, and his father Sanjay Mahto. The students stated that similar incidents had occurred previously, contributing to a sense of insecurity among residents.[20]
