Dr. S. Sunder (born Feb 10th, 1960), is a physiatrist by profession.

Dr.Sunder is a physician, musician[1], philanthropist and the founder of the Freedom Trust[2] He is a graduate from Stanley Medical College and holds a Post Graduate degree [M.D] in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is the Founder Medical Director of the PREM Center for Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Medicine and a Senior Consultant and till recently Head of the department of Physical medicine and Rehabilitation in Global Health City and Voluntary health services. He has been an industrial medical consultant for several companies and has been the President of the Indian Association of Occupational Health 1997.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Sunder was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India into a typical Tamil family. Sunder's mother Parvathy was a housewife and his father, Mr. Subramaniam was an internal auditor at TELCO, Bombay. Sunder grew up in Mumbai and Chennai.

Sunder completed schooling in Doveton Corrie and OLPS, Chembur, Mumbai. He completed the Class XII from SIES College Mumbai. Dr.Sunder holds an MD Degree in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation awarded by the Tamilnadu DR.MGR Medical University. After his M.B.B.S from Stanley Medical College in 1984, Dr.Sunder did his Post Graduate Diploma in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from Madras Medical College at the premier Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, Chennai. He is trained in Ergonomic Principles for Workplace assessment and Design at Lansing, sponsored by the University of Michigan U.S.A in 2006. Dr.Sunder is a certificate holder in Occupational health which includes training in Industrial Health and Ergonomics.

Experience[edit]

His experience in the field of rehabilitation spans nearly two decades. He has founded a successful outpatient service for pain and paralysis relief called PREM CENTER, which is one of the biggest of its kind in Chennai. He has also been responsible for establishing and running two inpatient rehabilitation centers in Chennai. He has been consultant to several NGO's in the area of disability for children. In the two decades after his graduation he has had over ten years of experience as industrial medical officer, to about 15 companies. He was the head of the Department of Physical medicine and Rehabilitation in the Global Hospitals, Chennai since 2008. His vast experience as a master trainer in Ergonomics, has enabled him to be one of the most sought after consultants and he has given over 200 lectures in more than 50 companies all over the country.

Research and Academic Experience[edit]

Dr. Sunder was recipient of the Lady Tata Memorial Research Scholarship, for a project on Rehabilitation of Upper Extremity Amputees, and was trained in Washington as an evaluator for a NIH funded program on Muscular dystrophy. He is an internationally certified GCP principal investigator for clinical trials, and travels regularly abroad to participate in research trials.

He is a master trainer in rehabilitation for the PHC doctors of Tamilnadu , sponsored by the Rehabilitation council of India. His expertise in the field of Rehabilitation stems from the fact that he has taught in several colleges of physiotherapy as visiting faculty in Rehabilitation Medicine. He has the rare distinction of being the only Indian to have authored a textbook on Rehabilitation Medicine for professionals in the field of rehabilitation. This textbook is in its third edition and is the prescribed book in universities all over India, and abroad. Another book MCQ' s IN REHABILITATION MEDICINE authored by him was released in 2004.

Career[edit]

In 1992, a young doctor set up PREM Center in Thiruvanmiyur, Madras, with a will to change the lives of many persons with disability and pain. Slowly, time saw this organization grow from strength to strength from a small center to one of the largest specialized physiotherapy centers in South Madras. Today PREM Center caters to hundreds of patients with chronic orthopedic and neurological problems, and has over fifteen dedicated staff. Dr.Sunder is the Medical director of the center and the guiding force behind it.

He founded the Freedom trust in 1997 with his uncle Mr.T.S.Subramaniam who has been the joint trustee of the Trust for all these years. Dr.Sunder decided to conduct camps in rural areas. His first camp for assessment, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and prescription of locomotor aids like crutches, or calipers was at Kelambakkam. He ensures that every handicapped person who attends to his camps is individually assessed by him. There are occasions when he goes without food through the day, when the numbers are many. " conducting these camps' is like a yagna for me" he says.

He has been recognized with " The Best Doctor in the Field of Social Service" by both the central and the state government and also he was bestowed with two "Life Time Achievement Awards" by the Government Institute of Rehabilitation medicine and the Lion Host International in 2017 for his outstanding service to the differently abled community.

Dr. Sunder as a musician[edit]

Dr.Sunder got introduced to music at a very young age by his mother Parvathy. He attended music classes in Chembur, Bombay way back in 1971, tutored by Sri.Vaidyanatha Iyer. At one stage he was juggling time with his classes in Bengali music, Hindi and Marathi , while not letting go of the first rank in his class.

He later came under the tutelage of Palghat Sri T.S.Anantharaman under whom he had personalized training. He also had the fortune to learn a few songs under Vidushi T.Brinda during her sojourns at Bombay. When he joined the SIES college in Sion, Bombay in 1976 he learnt for a brief period under Vidwan Trichy Swaminatha Iyer. By now his interest in music was fairly well entrenched and he had won almost all the prizes in music competitions in Bombay. The first public performance that he gave was in fact in Bengali music, at Birla Mandir, Bombay in 1975 and the second was a national integration music program conducted by his teacher in Bengali music Moloy Ghose in Shanmukhananda Hall Bombay.Providence brought him under the tutelage of the great maestro Sangeeta Kalanidhi Vidwan D.K.Jayaraman and he continued with him for 12 long years from 1978 to 1990.

Dr.Sunder is a musician and musicologist in the firmament of Carnatic music today. He is one of the senior most disciples of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Vidwan Sri D. K. Jayaraman. He won the KALAIMAMANI award from the state government of Tamil Nadu, India (2002) and from Sangeetha Kalanidhi Vidwan Sri.T.K.Govinda Rao. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Indian Music and is well versed in Musicology. He has given concerts all around the world and through the Music Forum of which he is convenor, he gives lecture demonstrations to school children to propagate Classical music. He has authored two books in music, and produced two serials in television on music. [2]

Personal Life[edit]

Dr.Sunder is married to Usha Sunder and has two children. Sunder's interests include swimming, watching movies and writing.
