SARS-CoV-2 Eris variant

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Eris variant (officially known as EG.5) is a SARS-CoV-2 variant of interest. Eris was identified as a subvariant of the Omicron variant in February 2023, with cases increasing since then. Given the official name EG.5, the variant was named Eris on social media, sharing its name with the goddess from Greek mythology, something the BBC suggested as possibly being a follow on from the WHO's convention of naming variants after letters of the Greek alphabet. In August 2023, BBC News reported the World Health Organisation said the variant poses no greater risk to people than other COVID-19 variants, but has asked countries to monitor the number of cases.[1] On 6 August, the UK Health Security Agency reported the EG.5 strain was responsible for one in seven new cases in the UK during the third week of July.[2]
