SCP: Secret Laboratory is a free-to-play multiplayer first-person shooter developed and published by Northwood Studios. Released in 2017 via Steam, it is inspired by the indie game SCP – Containment Breach and is based on the fan collaboration project 'SCP Foundation' [1][2] The game features multiplayer matches, where players take the roles of facility guards, scientists, class-D personnel (somewhat test subjects), chaos insurgencies (CI), MTF (mobile task forces), or hostile anomalous entities known as SCPs during a containment breach at a facility named Site-02.

Gameplay

Games in SCP: Secret Laboratory take place in Site-02, a fictional underground research and containment facility. Each round begins with players randomly assigned to one of several roles, broadly divided into human classes and SCP entities.[3]

Human classes include Class-D personnel, scientists, Mobile Task Force operatives (MTF), and members of the Chaos Insurgency. Class-Ds and scientists attempt to escape the facility, while MTF and Chaos operatives enter the site later in the round to either contain the SCPs, or let them roam free.

SCP entities are anomalous beings with abilities. Their goal is to eliminate human players and prevent escapes. SCPs include SCP-173 (a living statue), SCP-049 (a plague doctor), SCP-096 (the "Shy Guy"), SCP-939 (a predator that hunts using sound), SCP-106 (an elder humanoid with a pocket dimension), and SCP-079 (a sentient computer that manipulates doors and systems).[1]

The facility is divided into zones: the Light Containment Zone (LCZ) , Heavy Containment Zone (HCZ), Entrance Zone (EZ), and the Surface Zone (SZ). Each zone contains key resources such as keycards, and SCP Items contained in bulletproof lockers, and escape routes.[2] Communication between players is supported through integrated VoIP, and cooperation or deception is a key part of survival.

Rounds typically end when one faction achieves its objectives—for example, scientists escaping as MTF, and containing the SCPs, and SCPs eliminating all humans, or the Chaos Insurgency eliminating all foundation forces.[3]

Development

Development of 'SCP: Secret Laboratory' began in 2017, led by Hubert Moszka of Northwood Studios. Early versions were tested on Unity and shown through community livestreams, gradually building a player base prior to release.[4]

The game launched in December 2017 as a free-to-play title on Steam and attracted attention for its recreation of the fan collaboration project named 'SCP Foundation'. Northwood Studios continued to expand the game after launch, introducing new SCP entities, balancing mechanics, and organizing seasonal events. In 2020, the developers announced long-term support plans, including server upgrades and overhauls to AI and networking systems.[5]

By 2022, the game had surpassed several million downloads worldwide on Steam, supported by dedicated community servers and official modding tools.[6]

Reception

On Steam, the game holds a "Mostly Positive" rating, with over 150,000 reviews as of 2025.[1]

A review titled “SCP: Secret Laboratory First Impression…” offers candid commentary on its strengths (fun gameplay) and limitations (server access issues, technical roughness).[7]

On July 7, 2018, a post titled 'Valve leaks Steam game player counts;' SCP:Secret Laboratory is estimated to have 973,512 players in total.[8]

On July 31, 2024, an article titled “SCP: Secret Laboratory player who 'can’t remember shit' invents their own custom mapping tool like a horror game MacGyver”.[9]
