The Slavic & East European Professional List (SEELANGS)[1] is a professional electronic mailing list and major online resource for the academic field of Slavic languages and their associated literatures and cultures. The list is pre-moderated and has thousands of professional subscribers worldwide, where queries and their summarized results, discussions, funding opportunities, job posting, calls for papers, book and conference announcements, and other useful pieces of information are posted. The list's archives[2][3], which have been preserved since 1991, have served as an opportunity for scholars researching the history of the field, as well as the changes of language use and disciplinary emphases over time.

History[edit]

Founded in 1991, SEELANGS was initially affiliated with the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL) and was hosted for its first 16 years on the LISTSERV server at the City University of New York (CUNY). In March 2007, the list moved to the LISTSERV server at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, where it was administered by Andrew Drozd.[4] In 2021, the list moved to Indiana University Bloomington, with a new set of list protocols in place, a steering committee composed of professionals from the field, and a newly moderated status from the support of Indiana University’s Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures.[5]

The list’s unmoderated status in the years before it came to be hosted at Indiana University created controversial, heated exchanges and repeated violations of stated guidelines. These conditions reached a peak in late 2017[6], and encouraged a group of concerned subscribers to begin discussing how a moderated list could be established. These discussions led to agreement to transfer the list operations to Indiana University, the formation of a Steering Committee[7], an overhaul of the list guidelines with an eye towards encouraging an atmosphere of professional exchange, and the establishment of a regular protocol for list maintenance and professional standards.

Services[edit]

The main service of SEELANGS is its mailing list, in which members are forwarded all postings directly, as a daily digest, or as a summary, depending on their preferences.[8]

Members must register in order to receive and submit postings to the mailing list. Postings are submitted through email to the list address.
