Seiban Co., Ltd. (SEIBAN COMPANY LIMITED) is a company headquartered in Tatsuno, Hyogo that manufactures and sells various bags.
The company name comes from a combination of "manufacturing bags = sei-kaban" and the location of its headquarters in the western Harima region of Hyogo Prefecture, known as "Seiban," giving the name a double meaning.
Overview
The founder, Kamekichi Izumi, from Murotsu, established the company in 1919 (Taisho 8) in Osaka to produce bags, wallets, and traditional Japanese pipes using leather sourced from the Harima region. After the postwar period, the headquarters was moved to Mitsu (present-day Tatsuno, Hyogo) and began manufacturing randoseru school backpacks in 1946 (Showa 21).
Seiban has been a long-established randoseru maker, initially limited in sales area due to being a small-to-medium enterprise, but in 2003, it gained nationwide recognition with the development and launch of "Tenshi no Hane," registered in the Guinness World Records as the world's lightest and most durable school backpack. As of 2016, it held approximately 50% of the domestic market share.[1]
The Tenshi no Hane (“Angel Wings”) design initially referred to a plastic wing embedded in the shoulder strap base to raise the backpack’s center of gravity, making it easier for children to carry. Today, it is recognized as the brand’s signature product, and customers often ask for Tenshi no Hane by name in stores.
Seiban’s headquarters and factories remain based in western Harima, Hyogo. National brand sales (Model Royal series, Love Pea series, Wanpa series) are handled by the group company Three I Corporation in Osaka. The company also sells adult (business) randoseru in Germany, expanding internationally.
In 2019, for its 100th anniversary, Seiban completed the "Seiban Smile Factory" in 2020 in Tatsuno City. It consolidated production processes, features a showroom with "Randoseru Concierges," allows visitors to observe the factory from the second floor, and includes a museum.[2]
Seiban uses synthetic leather and other materials that are safe for children and do not emit dioxins when burned. Shoulder straps can be equipped with safety buzzers, reflecting parental concerns for child health and safety.
The company began advertising through cable television and local channels like Sun Television, and more recently on major networks in the Kanto region. Since 2004, it has been a national sponsor on major TV programs during the school enrollment season (October–March). Recently, advertising also runs from June to November on Nichiasa Kids Time anime and tokusatsu shows.
