The San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council (SFBCTC), alternatively known as the SF Building Trades, is a prominent labor organization comprising a number of local union affiliates representing skilled tradespeople in the construction industry within the county of San Francisco, California, and surrounding regions. Founded in 1896, the council has a rich history and has played a pivotal role in shaping the labor landscape in the region.
Affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL–CIO) and North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU), the council’s primary mission is to advocate for the interests of its local affiliates and its members who are trained and specialize in a wide-range of construction-related work.[1] The council strives to secure fair wages, benefits and safe working conditions through its collective bargaining efforts with employers, while leveraging its strength to support policies and initiatives that align with the interests of workers, expand labor opportunities in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and steer the overall direction of the industry through its involvement with city, county and state government bodies. Placing a strong emphasis on the development of skilled trades, the council also partners with various organizations in the public, private and non-profit sectors to establish comprehensive training and apprenticeship programs, producing a competent and competitive workforce within its ranks.
