SIDeR
The Student Interaction Design Research (SIDeR) conference is a series of academic conferences for students in Interaction design held at universities in Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands and Germany. SIDeR is held annually since 2005.
Overview[edit]
The SIDeR conference is a platform especially created for graduate and post-graduate students in Interaction design studies showcasing research findings by presenting admitted papers, demos or posters to an international audience consisting of students in similar studies, professional researchers and designers as well as the public.[1]
The program structure changes annually due to the changing organisational teams. The conference usually is two days long revolving around the paper sessions where the students present their findings. Each conference usually includes keynote presentations by leading or rising figures in design and design research, hands-on workshops presenting new technologies or fostering creative thinking, panel discussions with advice from companies or other professionals. The formal program is accompanied by social events with the aim to create an international network of like minded people who shape the future of interaction design.[2]
History[edit]
The conference was founded and first organised by the students of the IT Product Design department of the University of Southern Denmark, also called SDU, led by Jacob Buur, professor for User-centered design, Ben Matthews, former professor at SDU, and Mette Mark Larsen, Course Coordinator, in 2005.[3] Jacob Buur and Ben Matthews introduced the concept of the conference to universities which followed hosting it.[4]
2005 in Sønderborg[edit]
The first conference in the series was held at the Mads Clausen Institute at the SDU in Sønderborg and the proceedings are titled "New eyes on interaction design". The topic of the first day was interaction design and Erik Stolterman, a design researcher at the Department of Informatics at Umeå University, opened it with a keynote. The paper sessions on the first day were titled: Full Body Interaction, Hands & Minds and See, Hear & Touch. Thomas Binder, a design researcher, held the keynote on the second day. The paper sessions on day two were titled: Professional Roles I, What User?, Staging Design, Professional Roles II and Design Moves. Student speakers from Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Germany presented their work.[5]
2006 in Gothenburg[edit]
The second conference was at the Interaction Design Collegium (IDC), which is a joint department of IT University between Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The conference chairperson was Eva Eriksson.
The paper sessions were called: Red, Yellow, Black, Blue, Saturation, Brightness, Cyan, Magenta and Green.
Papers were presented by students from Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands.
The keynotes were held by Lars Hallnäs from the Swedisch School of Textiles & Chalmers University of Technology, Jussi Holopainen from the Nokia Research Center and Dag Svanaes from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.[6]
The conference title was first shown as "SIDeR", in all capitals except the lowercase "e".

Participation[edit]
The theme is published by the conference committees with a call for papers which should roughly count 2000 words, following paper formats by the Association for Computing Machinery[28] or Nordes.[29] Posters and demos Entered papers are reviewed by international professors with a focus on junior professors. The approved papers are then curated by the conference committee. For the first conferences the submissions were registered via mail which was improved to EasyChair an electronic submission system used since 2014.
The conferences get financed with contributions by sponsors, university funds and participation fees. Participation fees rose from 25 € at the first conference to 70 € for students in 2018 and 2019.[30][31] Participants who are not enrolled in studies are charged more, but compared to similar conferences not focussing on students like Design Matters 2020 conference held in Copenhagen participation fees at SIDeR conferences are more affordable.
