SMA Negeri 3 Yogyakarta (EN: Senior High School 3 Yogyakarta) or known as Padmanaba or 3 Bhe is a high school in the city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia located in the Gondokusuman subdistrict (Kotabaru area) at Jalan Komodor Laut Yos Sudarso. This school formerly known as Dutch East Indies High School or AMS (Algemene Middelbare School) 'afdeeling' (section) B that established on July 5th 1919 [2] which purposed as a basis for STEM students who will continue to higher education such as THS te Bandung ( Technische Hoogeschool te Bandung) in Bandung or STOVIA (School tot Opleiding van Inlandsche Artsen) in Jakarta (formerly Batavia). This school is also called 'SMA 3 Bhe' due to its former name.
History
AMS (Algemene Middelbare School) B Phase
After the Dutch colonial regime in the East Indies (now Indonesia) created an ethical policy (ID : Politik Balas Budi, Dutch: Ethische Politiek), one policy that needed to be implemented was education. In terms of education, there were many schools in Dutch-Colonized Indonesia that had been established before AMS (Algemene Middelbare School) such as Hogere Burgerschool (HBS) or Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs (MULO) which were predecessors of both AMS and HBS. But, HBS was known solely for selected children of aristocrats or the elite (especially European (Dutch) and selected locals ('pribumi')) and its educational years were programmed for 5 years.[3]. To fulfill this program, a school that was established for the general public in Dutch East Indies should be commenced soon and the AMS (Algemene Middelbare School) form was selected.
On July 5th 1919, the first AMS was established in the City of Yogyakarta (formerly known as Vorstenlanden Mataram) as the first project of AMS for each big city in Dutch East Indies [4]. The first AMS itself was AMS afdeling (section) B which was solely purposed for STEM students.
As AMS afdeling B, they adopted a Dutch-style curriculum which consisted of academic lessons, gymnastics (sports), and non-academic activities such as arts and a student press. Some of its prominent alumni from the AMS era are :
- Johanna Sunarti Nasution (late wife of Gen. Abdul Haris Nasution)
- Lambertus Nicodemus Palar (Indonesian diplomat and former minister)
- Martinus Putuhena (former minister of Indonesia)
- Mananti Sitompul (former minister of Indonesia)
- Mashudi (former Governor of West Java)
- Siswondo Parman (victim of the 30 September Movement)
- Soeprapto (victim of the 30 September Movement)
- Mohammad Yamin (Indonesian Founding Father)
- Omar Dhani (former head chief of Indonesian Air Force that was suspected as a member of the 30 September Movement)
- Paku Alam VIII (former regent of Pakualaman)
- Radius Prawiro
- Roosseno (Engineer and partner of Soekarno in their engineering firm)
- Soedarpo Sastrosatomo (Indonesian businessman)
- Subroto (former minister of Indonesia)
- Suwiryo (former vice prime minister and mayor of Jakarta)
Japanese Occupation (SMT Yogyakarta)
After the Japanese invasion and occupation, this school then changed its name into SMT Yogyakarta while merging with AMS afd A Yogyakarta (currently known as SMA Negeri 1 Yogyakarta). This merger also created a school logo and alumni organization called 'Padmanaba'
