SMPP Pvt Ltd

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

SMPP Pvt Ltd is an Indian defence company headquartered in New Delhi, India. The company manufactures bulletproof vests and jackets, body armor, Boron Carbide ceramics, and combustible cartridge cases for ammunition.

SMPP was originally setup to supply combustible cartridge cases to the Indian Army. Over the years, the company diversified its product portfolio to ceramics and body armor, and its products are used by militaries and law enforcement agencies in over 100 countries.

History[edit]

SMPP started operations producing combustible cartridge cases for the Indian army in 1985[1].

In the year 2000, soon after the Kargil war, the company diversified into Boron Carbide ceramics in response to a requirement for lightweight armor by the Indian Army. This product was commercialised for use in lightweight, high performance armor applications starting in 2005.

SM Carapace Armor was created as a wholly owned subsidiary of SMPP Pvt Ltd, primarily to export ceramic armor and body armor.

Management[edit]

Dr. S.C. Kansal founded[2] the company in 1986, and continues as Chairman. Ashish Kansal is the Executive Director of the company.

Technology[edit]

SMPP developed its core technology of reaction bonded Boron Carbide, as an improvement over existing technology of sintered Boron Carbide at its Research and Development facility in Haryana. The company now has its second R&D facility in New Delhi. The biggest improvement this technology offered was multi-hit protection against rifle ammunition, as required in NIJ[3] and STANAG standards.

Business[edit]

Boron carbide[edit]

SMPP produces reaction bonded boron carbide ceramics at its facility in Haryana, India. Boron carbide is known to be the third hardest material on earth. Because of this exceptional hardness, it finds uses in high performance armor applications. For armor applications, SMPP exports a large amount of boron carbide ceramics both in the form of tiles as well as composite armor. These go into end uses of high end body armor, as well as helicopter and aircraft armor.

Platform armor[edit]

Boron Carbide ceramics have been used the world over in demanding applications such as helicopter armor[4], aircraft and platform armor, and lightweight body armor. SMPP is one among a handful of companies that produce this high performance Boron Carbide. For aircraft armor, its products have been used to armor the Airbus A400M, Boeing Chinook CH47, Agusta Westland 110 among other helicopters.

Body Armor[edit]

For body armor, SMPP is supplying a INR 650 Crores[5] (approximately USD 100 Million) contract with the Indian Army to supply the next generation of body armor for the next three years[6]. The contract for jackets is for 186,000 units[7][8][9][10][11][12], and offer the Indian soldier 360 degrees upper torso protection[13]. SMPP's products are also exported to end users in military and police in South Korea, Thailand, Australia, Egypt, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands etc.
