SMW Wheels is an international company founded in 2000 with headquarters in Riga, Latvia producing forged wheels for automotive and motorsports industries.[1]. SMW works with various aluminium and magnesium alloys, including those for aerospace applications, such as ZK60. SMW manufactures parts for OEM programs and for motorsports teams[2].

Production Process and Capabilities[edit]

Large-sized magnesium and aluminium forgings(up to 3000 mm) are produced by a proprietary closed-die net-shape forging process (10,000 - 15,000 t hydraulic force) - achieving higher characteristics and mechanical properties[3].

SMW provides a range of technology and engineering solutions and services, specializing in light weighting and weight reduction in components for various applications. Among its own high-strength alloys is the patented AlMaScan system for additive manufacturing (3D printing) and for rolling sheet from 0.5 mm thickness. In addition to forgings, SMW supplies extruded bar, plate and various fabrications[4].

SMW wheels are designed and built for motorsports - to meet all the operational and safety requirements of the pilots[5]

ZK60[edit]

Itemization of 7 benefits derived by way of forged Mg wheels (ZK60 alloy):

  • Wheel weight up to 25% lower than with forged aluminium or twice lighter than typical cast wheels
  • Improved vehicle performance especially at cornering
  • Faster acceleration[6]
  • Shorter braking distance in some circumstances
  • Fuel savings and proportional reduction of CO2 emissions
  • Increased service life of tires and brakes
  • Higher damping capacity leading to more comfort[7]

History[edit]

Until 2004 SMW Engineering (a Russian company) was affiliated with Solikamsk Magnesium Works, Russia's oldest magnesium smelter and research facility (producer of primary magnesium and alloys, titanium sponge and rare-earth metal derivatives)[8]. SMW was also affiliated with Russian Institute of Titanium and Magnesium (RITM). The engineering arm of SMW'was spun off in 2003, and began to transfer its operations to Europe.

Missions[edit]

SMW Wheels jointly with MagnesiumCom had announced plans to introduce widely Formula One grade wheels for mainstream street use. SMW has declared its commitment to achieve a reduction in carbon emissions, and also to improve road safety by way of decreasing braking distance.is aiming to introduce widely the best in class Formula One grade wheels -- to the rest of the driving world, for street use. SMW is determined to help achieve a reduction in carbon emissions, and also to improve road safety by way of decreasing braking distance.[9]
