SORTES is an online literary magazine established in May 2020 by founding editors Jeremy Eric Tenenbaum and Kevin Travers. The magazine derives its name from the Sortes Vergilianae, referenced by Graham Greene in The Human Factor (novel):

"He had opened the book at random several times, seeking a sortes Virgilianae, before he chose the sentences on which his code was to be based. 'You say: I am not free. But I have lifted my hand and let it fall.' It was as if in choosing that passage, he were transmitting a signal of defiance..."

— Graham Greene

SORTES's editors are based in Philadelphia but the magazine publishes contributors from around the world.

Contents[edit]

SORTES publishes short fiction, creative nonfiction, poems, songs, graphics, and fine artwork. Published genres span "magic realism, dirty surrealism, fantastical biography, experimental poetry, tender balladeering, [and] elusive allusive elliptical poetry."

Issues, published quarterly, are not themed. Each issue is limited to the work of ten contributors to focus on a limited number of artists and to connect contributors with audience members.

SORTES considers unsolicited submissions throughout the year from contributors with both extensive and limited publishing experience. The magazine accept simultaneous submissions.

Events[edit]

SORTES organizes a public, Zoom-based reading / performance following the publication of each issue. In addition, the magazine periodically stages a "Radio SORTES" event in which the Radio SORTES Players perform old time radio programs.
