SOS Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School Gandaki (SOS HGS Gandaki)[1][2][3], run under its umbrella organization SOS Kinderdorf International[4][5], was established in 1982 AD at Rambazar, Pokhara along with the SOS Children’s Village Gandaki run under the SOS Children’s Villages International. It is a non-profit co-educational organization that has been imparting quality education to children from SOS Children’s Village Gandaki and talented children from socially and economically backward strata since 1982. Initially run up to grade 5, the school was promoted to secondary school in 2002 AD. It is guided by what the founder of SOS Children’s Villages said: “All the children of the world are our children.”
The school was awarded the Best School in Nepal by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Government of Nepal in 2019[6].
Accreditation[edit]
SOS HGS Gandaki is currently accredited to the National Examination Board (NEB) of Nepal. Thus, all students from Grade 10 to Grade 12 need to appear the National level Examination to get enrolled in higher studies.
Admission and Scholarships[edit]
SOS HGS Gandaki admits students without regard to ethnicity, race, religion, culture or creed[7]. Normally, admission is open to students intending to enroll at Nursery, Grade 6 and Grade 11. The school provides generous scholarships according to financial need of students.
Admission to Grade 11 is extremely competitive with around 1500 students all over Nepal competing for around 80 available seats. Admission is determined through the performance on selective entrance examination, interviews, and academic achievements in SEE examination.
Academics[edit]
The school runs classes from Grade Nursery to Grade 12. Grade 11 and 12 have classes run only in the science stream with the courses: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, English, and Nepali. Grade 10 students complete the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) to enroll in Grade 11. Grade 11 and Grade 12 students appear in the National Level Examination during each of the two years. High school graduation is complete after students receive results of the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination of Grade 12.
Students have access to computer lab and science labs[8]. The school has three separate laboratories: Physics, Chemistry and Biology lab with all necessary equipment. The school has an ICT lab where 30 stand-alone systems are integrated with internet facility to enhance practical knowledge. To enhance the teaching and learning environment as per the requirement of modern teaching methodologies, the school has made a plan to implement E-Learning environment in classroom as well as at home via Learning Management System (LMS) technology[9].
Students are engaged in extra-curricular and sports activities through various student clubs: Prefect Council (as student administrative body), Red Cross, Sports Clubs, etc. and activities: quiz, spelling contest, debates, eloquence, essay writing, art, talent show, and calligraphy contest. Music, dance, drama and art classes are run to students interested in these fields[10].
