SS Adriatic (Collins Line)

The PS Adriatic was a wooden-hulled transatlantic paddle steamer that was operated by the Collins Line in 1857.
The paddle steamer "Adriatic" was initially operated by the Collins Line, before being sold off. The "Adriatic" was launched on 7th April 1856. She was intended to begin service in November the same year, but due to technical issues, she did not go on her sea trials until 1857. The Adriatic was among the first ships to be depicted on a postage stamp when used on a 12¢ value of the United States in 1869. The paddle steamer "Adriatic" was the finest and fastest vessel afloat at that time. She was built by Steers in New York and was 355 feet long (108.2 metres), 50 feet wide (15.24 metres), and had a gross register tonnage of 3,670 tons. Her machinery, which was constructed at the Novelty Iron Works of New York, consisted of two oscillating cylinders, each 2.54m in diameter working up to 3,600 indicated horse-power, with a steam pressure of 20 psi. Her paddles were 40 feet (12.2 metres) in diameter and rotating at up to 17 revolutions per minute gave her a speed of 13 knots on daily consumption of 85 to 90 tons of coal. In 1858, the company that first owned the PS Adriatic liquidated after losses due to two disasters, the loss of their SS Arctic in 1854, and the vanishing of their SS Pacific two years later in 1856. The Adriatic was thus sold for British mail service. After a conversion to make the Adriatic into a sailing ship in 1871, it became a coal hulk for the African Steamship Line and was beached in August 1885 in Bonny, Rivers State, Africa, after the now 29-year-old P.S. Adriatic was leaking so badly, she could no longer be used as a storeship. [1] She was presumably left aground for around 70 years, as there were reports of her as a grounded, rotting ship up until around 1955.
