The STB two-axle tramcars were a series of motor cars and trailer cars manufactured by different companies (and later overhauled locally) for the Bucharest Tram Society (Societatea de Tramvaie București, not to be confused with the present-day STB) from 1912 to 1942. These motorized and unmotorized cars served as the backbone of the public transport network in Bucharest until they were replaced by the V3A and V2A models between 1971 and 1987. After their withdrawal from passenger service, several of them served as service cars until they were replaced by VU95 cars, which themselves were made out of withdrawn EP/V3A cars.
In addition to running in Bucharest, several V56/V58 trams were built specifically for other cities in Romania, running in Oradea, Timișoara, Arad, Sibiu, Brăila, Galați and Iași, the last of which operated examples as late as the mid 1990s, albeit with several external modifications meant to extend their useful life.
