STEMUp Educational Foundation is a non-profit organization located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This foundation was started with a vision of bringing a change in the country education system by offering quality STEM education to Students.[1] It has a registered volunteer count of over 600 but is run with an initial core team of 4 people, which has now grown to 18. Their tagline is 'We Believe in Change'. They strive to inspire, sensitize, empower & mobilize university students to be agents of social transformation in their respective communities through volunteerism in Sri Lanka. It runs entirely on a volunteer basis. It has no political, religious, or racial ties or bias. They have on-going partnerships with Commercial Bank of Ceylon[2], Sri Lanka Telecom [3] and Millennium IT ESP [4]

History[edit]

STEMUp Educational Foundation is a not for profit association, incorporated under the Companies Act No. 07 of 2007 and established on January 2016. Initially it proceeded with small scale projects, however, the Foundation now possesses the capability and capacity to undertake medium and large scale projects.

Programs[edit]

Micro:bit Sri Lanka User Group[edit]

It has started an initiative called Micro:bit Sri Lanka User Group to bring IoT education to Students who are living in rural areas in Sri Lanka.[5]. Micro:bit Sri Lanka User Group is the country partner of Micro Bit Educational Foundation for Sri Lanka.[6][7][8][8]

CoderDojo Sri Lanka[edit]

CoderDojo Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan network of CoderDojo – an international open source social education movement oriented around the running of fun, free and social coding clubs for young people aged 10–17. Recently they launched a new project called "CoderDojo at Libraries"[9] to hold free coding clubs at libraries during weekends. Sri Lanka Telecom announces a partnership with STEMUP Educational Foundation to hold CoderDojo, Coding Clubs inside their island-wide regional offices and training centers.[10]

Machine Learning for Kids (Sinhala:පොඩ්ඩන්ට Machine Learning)[edit]

They have started Machine Learning for Kids program to encourage kids to learn Machine Learning and AI at their early ages. Workshops are being conducted throughout the country through their volunteer base.

Awards & Recognition[edit]

STEMUP Educational Foundation has won 03 awards at Sri Lanka Telecom Zero One Awards 2018/2019 Ceremony. (Overall Winner - Best Community Enablement Programme CoderDojo Sri Lanka, Winner in the Information Sector under best community empowerment programme - CoderDojo Sri Lanka, 1st Runner-up in the Government Institutes and NGOs under best community empowerment programme - Micro:bit Sri Lanka)[11] [12]
