Sacred Line Genesis is a visual novel video game developed by Russian independent developer Sasha Darko for the Sega Genesis and published by Watermelon. The game was released worldwide on February 27, 2015.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]
Plot[edit]
It tells the story of Ellen, a private detective, who is trying to survive in Eastern Europe. Lately detective business, which she inherited from her missing sister Sarah, almost ceased its existence and one day before she was going to close her office she got an anonymous call. The unknown asked her to find some hidden forest outpost and told her about its position. That was just the beginning.
Gameplay[edit]
Sacred Line Genesis is a horror visual novel in which the player assumes the role of Ellen. Much of its gameplay is spent on reading the story's narrative and dialogue. Sacred Line Genesis follows a branching plot line with multiple endings, and depending on the decisions that the player makes during the game, the plot will progress in a specific direction.
Development[edit]
Sacred Line Genesis was programmed using a modification of GINCS development tool. It was initially released on October 24 2013 in a digital form via developer website labeled as a "Version 1.0". Since then the game got several improvements, most notable being a complete overhaul of the game text by Ken Horowitz, creator of Sega-16 website.[18]
The final version labeled "Version 1.2.5" was released on physical cartridges that can be played on Sega Genesis systems. It also was released in a digital form by the developer and is being sold via his website. For an additional price any buyer can order an "Unique Pack" to have their name being show inside the game main menu, making Sacred Line Genesis the only homebrew game with such feature.
Reception[edit]
Reviews of Sacred Line Genesis among buyers were mostly positive.[19][20][21][22][23][24] The game was covered by YouTube channels Game Sack[25] and Nostalgia Dos Games[26], getting mild positive revievws from both. It received 7 of 10 from Retro Gaming Magazine.[27] It was also covered by TecnoVortex[28] and OldFagRoom[29].
While its presentation was widely praised, reception to the gameplay was average. It was also criticized by Retro Gamer for its violent and disturbing scenes.[30]
Horror Geek Life added Sacred Line Genesis on their list of "Top 10 Sega Genesis Spookiest Horror Games".[31]
PC Port[edit]
A Steam version of Sacred Line Genesis, developed by 1812 Productions, was released for the PC on June 1 2016.[32][33][34] The port was labeled as a "kinetic version" and got mostly negative user reviews.[35] It was heavily criticized for its lack of gameplay options which were presented in the original version.
Fan Translations[edit]
The game received a Spanish translation made by ElotroLado user Luceid in collaboration with romhacking team Byte Swap. It was released for free on January 11, 2020.[36]
Sacred Line Zero[edit]
The prequel called Sacred Line Zero was in development, but eventually got canceled because of the conflict with the new president of Watermelon, who refused to pay developer a part of royalties for Sacred Line Genesis. Sasha Darko then released a music video called "MOUSTACHE BUSINESS" which covers the situation. [37][38][39] YouTube channel "st1ka" made a documentary "What Happened to Paprium?" which features an audio interview with Sasha Darko regarding the conflict.[40]
The prototype was released for free download in 2018. [41][42][43]
