Sade Greenwood (Sinhala:ශාදේ ග්‍රීන්වූඩ් )is a 19-year-old Sri Lankan Model , A Social Sustainability Ambassador , An Animal Activist ,"International Relations" Student and a Beauty Pageant Titleholder who was crowned Miss World Sri Lanka 2021. She was chosen to represent Sri Lanka at the 70th Miss World 2021 pageant, to be held in 2022 at José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Personal Life And Education[edit]

Sade Greenwood was born to a German british father and a Sri Lankan mother. She also has an elder sister in her family, who lives in London. Sade is an avid reader and hails from Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka.[1] The 19-year-old student and model is a social ambassador for The Pearl Protectors, an organization which strives to protect and create awareness about marine environment. She has been working there since the age of 16 and does regularly working part time for Embark, an organisation run by Otara Gunewardene , which is aimed at helping stray dogs across Sri Lanka to have a home and be taken care. She is currently a student, studying International Relations in Tokyo International University, Japan. She completed her schooling at Asian International School.

She also participated in an animal rights silent protest in order to promote and ensure animal welfare in her country. Greenwood is an avid animal activist and took part in an Animal Rights Silent Protest for the government to pass the Animal Welfare Bill and considers it as one of the most proudest moments of her life. Her hobbies and interests include marine conservation, poetry and writing. She speaks English and basic Japanese.[2]

Miss World Sri Lanka 2021[edit]

Selections for ‘Siyatha Miss Sri Lanka World 2021’ took place at the Hilton (Colombo) on Sunday , November 07th. The Directors, Sangeetha Weeraratne, Sherine and Dananjaya Bandara officially announced her to represent the country.

Miss World 2021–2022[edit]

Sri Lanka last competed in the international competition in 2019 under the delegation of Miss World Sri Lanka 2019 Dewmini Thathsarani, who was highly appreciated for her performance at the event but unfortunately remained unplaced. She represented the island country at the 70th edition of Miss World pageant which held on the postponed date 16th March 2022 (original date being 16th December 2021) at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Miss World 2019 winner Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica will crown her successor at the end of the event. The event got postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic where many contestants tested positive.

Sade was selected among the Top 40 contestants and was also among the Top 25 Judges Choices to win the Miss World 2021 title, and was on the top 10 for the Beauty With A Purpose Project. It is the highest ever ranking won by a Sri Lankan contestant in forty years , last in 1978 with Manohari Wanigasuriya ending up in Top 15.[3]

Advocacy[edit]

For her Miss World 2021 Beauty With A Purpose Project, she and her initiative The Pearl Protectors aims to introduce and incorporate maritime laws and conventions that will protect Sri Lanka's marine life and conserve the coral reefs surrounding the country. This includes introducing preventive laws such as the dumping of garbage and sewage from ships passing through the waters.[4]

"As a little girl I always knew that I wanted to be somebody that made a positive difference in the world which is why I made it my mission to do as much as I could for my country and community. I strived to work hard and work towards my goal of one day representing my country on a global platform and bring awareness to the many charitable causes that I've been a part of over the years," the Sri Lankan queen recollected on her social media handle.

With this project , she was able to place on Top 10 at the Beauty with a Purpose Finals.

Endorsements[edit]

Tokyo Cement Group (Sri Lanka) announced the appointment of Sade Greenwood as the group's Social and Sustainability Ambassador. Through this affiliation, Sade will work together with Tokyo Cement to create public awareness on multiple social and sustainability initiatives carried out by the company, with the objective of rallying more people, especially the youth, to become active participants of environmental conservation and social upliftment.[3]
