The surname was originally Yang, however it was mandatory for Chinese immigrants in Thailand to modify their surname into a Thai sounding surname upon getting Thai citizenship. The surname is spelled แซ่หยาง in Thai, where Sae (แซ่) means Clan, and Yang (หยาง) is the original Chinese surname Yang (杨/楊).
