Safia/Safdar is a 2026 Indian Hindi-language social drama film directed by Baba Azmi.[1] The film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Kanwaljit Singh, and Aditi Subedi in lead roles. It was released digitally on ZEE5 on 16 January 2026.[2]
Plot
Set largely around a small-town barber shop, Safia/Safdar explores themes of identity, dignity, and generational conflict. The story follows a young woman confronting social stigma while uncovering a deeply personal family truth.

Release
The film had its world premiere at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival in 2025. It was later released for streaming on ZEE5 on 16 January 2026.[3]
Reception
Arpita Sarkar of OTT Play rated it 3.5/5 stars and said that "Safia/Safdar is a powerful depiction of how women go through various challenges to get accepted in a male-dominated society. It depicts gender inequality and employment inequality.[4] Siddartha Toleti of m9 News said that "Safia/Safdar, a poor man's Gully Boy, even with its flaws, leaves you with a good aftertaste because it is simple, straightforward, and compact. It doesn't go overboard with the drama; the situations are relatable, and the characters come alive earnestly.[5]
