History and Development
Development of Saily began with the goal of creating a package manager that avoided borrowing code from older, potentially outdated projects, allowing the developers to implement modern standards for both performance and security.[2] The developers, led by Lakr Aream and Brecken Lusk, focused on high-speed source refreshing and package installation, features which they demonstrated during the alpha and beta testing phases.[3]
The manager entered its alpha testing stage for public review in August 2021[3] and was officially released to the general public via the BigBoss repository in January 2022.[1] Early in its development, the team considered Saily an option for users of the RootlessJB, an environment that lacked a dedicated, feature-complete package manager at the time.[2]
Features
Saily is based on the Advanced Package Tool (APT), the same architecture used by Cydia and Sileo, ensuring compatibility with the vast majority of jailbreak repositories and packages.[1] Its primary features focus on improving the user experience and performance over its predecessors:
Performance: Saily was built with modern code utilities to increase the speed of repository refreshing and package management operations.[2]
User Interface: The interface was designed to be aesthetically pleasing and unique, with an emphasis on a contemporary user experience.[1]
Compatibility: It is built to work alongside other installed package managers and includes a feature to easily import all existing repositories from Cydia, Sileo, Zebra, and Installer.[3]
Depictions: The manager encourages and supports the use of Native Depictions (package description pages built into the app) while maintaining support for traditional Web Depictions.[2]
Monetization: Saily supports a secure payment system for purchasing paid jailbreak packages, while also allowing developers to integrate their package purchases.[2]
Adoption
Saily's notability increased significantly due to its adoption by a major jailbreak tool during the iOS 15 era.
The XinaA15 jailbreak, which targets A12-A15 devices on iOS 15.0–15.1.1, began installing both Sileo and Saily by default upon initial jailbreaking.[4]
This dual installation led to community discussion regarding user preference and which manager was superior, raising Saily's profile within the jailbreaking community as a current alternative to the long-established leaders.[4]
As of its official release, Saily supported jailbroken devices running iOS or iPadOS 13 and later, working with tools such as checkra1n, unc0ver, Odyssey, and Taurine.[1]
