Sam Fishman (born October 26, 1990) is an American rapper, record producer, songwriter, and wire-wrapper. He became popular online through his collaborations with Yntendo on "All We Got" feat. Lizzy Land and through "Limitless" feat. Sophie Rose.[1] Soon after Limitless was released, the song was heavily featured in dance playlists and XM radio, soon used in a worldwide 2017 Samsung commercial.[2][3]

Outside of producing remixes, Fishman collaborates with Elijah Daniel under the alias, Dr Woke.[4] He also collaborates with Daniel under a more family-friendly EDM pop-act "adam&steve",[5] or taking his time to buy new crystals and wire-wrapping as a side hobby.

Music career

2014

In 2014, Fishman was first featured on The Lonely Island skit that aired on SNL where he produced 'When Will The Bass Drop',[6] a parody that took on EDM culture. Fishman spoke afterwards with Daniel Garber stating Jorma Taccone of The Lonely Island was a family friend. Fishman discusses how he started producing back in high school, which eventually lead him into EDM. Soon afterwards, Fishman began sending Taccone remixes that he was making, gaining a response six months later with encouragement to send more. Fishman was asked to remix "The Creep" and "Turtleneck and Chain", which eventually lead to remix the track "Yolo", featuring Adam Levine. Taccone eventually got hold of Fishman, claiming they had moved forward with a project that involved a song that had a long draw before the bass dropped.[7] "When Will The Bass Drop" hit No. 22 on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs.[8]

2016

On June 2nd, Fishman produced a song called "Sex With a Ghost", sung by Asa Taccone in The Lonely Island's movie called "Pop Star: Never Stop, Never Stopping".[9]

Fishman also featured in an episode of American Dad, episode 22 of season 11, "Standard Deviation".[10] His base house remix of "Flick-a-Da-Wrist" is played when character Stan Smith begins to hallucinate.[11][12]

In 2016, Fishman signed a publishing deal with Peermusic.[13]

2017

Dim Mak Records released Fishman's EP Electric Soul[14][15][16] mid 2017. The ep tracklist featured artists such as Sophie Rose, JVZEL, Danny White, Yntendo, and Lizzy Land. The song "Electric Soul" favoured support particularly from Steve Aoki, Borgeous, Afrojack, and Morgan Page, whilst also making its way onto Spotify's electroNOW playlist. During this time, Fishman hosted Dim Mak Studios weekly iHeartRadio show, whilst continuously releasing remixes along the way. The ep's song "Limitless" garnered attention as it charted #2 on Billboard Dance Radio and #6 on Dance Airplayland as it was heavily featured on SiriusXM for well over six months. The Electric Soul EP streamed over 5 million times on Apple Music, while nearly doubling to over 10 million streams on Spotify. Eventually, Limitless got a 100k sync for the Samsung Galaxy Commercial.[17] This song also featured at No. 38 on Billboard's Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart – making it his first billboard hit in three years.[18] Alongside Limitless's fame, "All We Got"[19][20] was also featured on the show Vida, in Season One, Episode Four.[21]

In 2017, Fishman adopted the alias "Dr Woke", as he produced and cowrote comedian and social media personality Elijah Daniel's hip hop album God Hates Lil Phag. The first song the two collaborated on was "Elton John",[22] along with several others.

2018

In a 2018 interview with Insomniac, Fishman opened up about his musical background claiming that he started playing piano as a kid, eventually growing to make fun beats in high school, and then began to take it more seriously in college.[23]

Fishman and Sophie Rose recollabed to release "Run Away" via Insomniac Records. On March 17, 2018, Fishman was invited to play at Beyond Wonderland in Southern California at Nos Events Center.

During this year, Fishman collaborated with Daniel [Lil Phag] on the album God Hates Lil Phag. This EP features Rico Nasty, Bella Thorne, Hoodie Allen, Cupcaake, Tana Mongeau and Mod Sun. "Clout 9", which features both Bella Thorne and Tana Mongeu, has been streamed on Youtube over six million times.[24]

International

In late December, Fishman wrote Jolin Tsai's song "Life Sucks"[25] on her album Ugly Beauty. This album topped charts in not only China, but Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan as well. Ugly Beauty set the record for highest-selling female artist of all time in the country.

2019

Fishman collaborated with fiancé Elijah Daniel in January on a project by the name of adam&steve. The duo is jokingly nicknamed the "Gay Chainsmokers" by the Daniels as the feeling of the project is meant to be one where the duo could "collaborate with any artist, across genres, but still keep their signature sound. They have created a sound, which LGBTQ+ community have connected with, and both have become activists in their own regards in the community. From outrageous crazy lyrics, to becoming a mayor of Hell, Michigan; the duo has become a voice for many. Having released over 7 works, they feature various artists including Maty Noyes, Sophie Rose, Gnash, JVZEL, XYLØ, Lostboycrow and Waterparks. The first two songs released (Younger ft Sophie Rose, and Wherever You Are ft Maty Noyes) were both playlisted heavily on "New Music Fridays". "Wherever You Are" gained nearly one million streams in just under two months. The duo have several songs that are already written, some finished and unreleased while others are waiting to be solidified with other features.

International

On April 17, Fishman revealed that he had produced and co-written kpop NCT-127's first single, "Lips" on their latest album, Awaken,[26] which sold over 50,000 copies in its first week.

2019 brought an escalation of attention towards both Fishman and Daniels respectively. In summer 2019, they released the album resERECTION[27] and FUCKGOD.[28] What ended up as a surprise to them though, was when resERECTION beat out Gucci Mane for No.1in iTunes hip-hop charts.[29]

On December 26, Daniel's and Fishman released an album consisting of five songs, labelled as "The Final Album".[30] This album was the start to move on from Lil Phag and Dr Woke and move towards their main project adam&steve. The intended "Final Tour"[31] was supposed to start in Grand Rapids, Michigan, while ending in Seattle, taking just over a month and a half. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, the tour, like many others, has been indefinitely postponed.

2020

Fishman, as stated in previous accomplishments, works with other artists to create their sound. In 2018, he worked with BONNIE X CLYDE's EP, While We're Young, which hit over 5 million streams on Spotify. As well as another song off the EP, The Unknown, which got a synch through the Fox studios film; The Underwater, which starred Kristin Stewart. The film came out on January 10, 2020, and had a gross of US$40.9 million at the box office.[32]

On February 7, Fishman and Daniel released a remix for "Sad Kid In a Black Hoodie"[33][34] featuring Scotty Sire both on Spotify and as a music video on Youtube.
