Samiya Farooqui is an Indian-born Badminton Player who has won the Silver medal at the Junior Grand Prix, 2017 in the Singles event. She, along with Gayatri Pullela, are one of India's top emerging Doubles players and are supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Abhinav Bindra Targeting Performance Programme.

Early life and background

Samiya started playing Badminton in 2010 after watching her father play the sport. Her natural ability and potential caught the eye of coaches at the Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad, and she was soon offered the opportunity to train under Chief National Coach, Pullela Gopichand.

Career

Samiya’s family shifted closer to her training base in Hyderabad to allow her maximum training time at the Gopichand Academy. She aspires to be world no. 1 and win all major women’s singles titles, including Olympic Gold, one day. Her talent and ability are complemented well by the wonderful support structure she has around her. She aims to represent and win medals for India at the international stage in her age category in the next five years. She has won a Bronze medal at the All India Sub Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament 2016 at Kurnool[2], a Silver medal in the Doubles event at the All India Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament 2016 at Tirupathi[3] and a Gold Medal at the All India Sub-Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament-2016 at Patna, Bihar along with Gayatri Pullela[4]. She is currently ranked 3rd in the National U-17 Singles Rankings[5].
