The Samsung Galaxy Book Ion was released in early 2020 alongside the Galaxy Book S, Galaxy Book Flex, and Galaxy Book Flex Alpha. It carries an industry-leading 600 nits of brightness on a 1080p QLED display, a first in the industry. Included in all models is 8 GB of DDR4 RAM and a 512 GB NVME M.2 SSD, both of which are upgradable post-purchase by the consumer in the 15.6" model only. Noted by various users, however, is the absence of the advertised Nvidia MX250 dedicated graphics card, which is only present in the South Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore markets.[1]

History[edit]

The Galaxy Book Ion was announced alongside the Galaxy Book Flex in October 2019.[2] Succeeding the Notebook 9, both models promised Intel's latest 10th generation CPUs, a longer battery life, and the ability to use the track pad as a wireless Qi charger.[2]

Specifications[edit]

All North American models include the 10th generation Intel Core i7-10510U processor, 8 GB of RAM (2666 MHz), a 512 GB SSD, and a 1080p Full HD display.[3] Only the 15" model has the capability to expand the RAM and SSD storage.

Unique to the North American version is the absence of the dedicated graphics card (Nvidia MX250) found in other markets, relying only on integrated Intel UHD graphics. However, all models include a single Thunderbolt 3 port, making it compatible with external GPUs.[3]

Both models come with Windows 10 Home, a 720p HD webcam, Wi-Fi 6, and Blutooth 5.0 capabilities.[4] With no Windows Hello Face ID option to log in, the Ion relies on a fingerprint reader found on the backlit keyboard. The Ion does not include the S-Pen, touch screen, or tablet convertible ability found on the Galaxy Book Flex. [5]

To achieve a light weight, Samsung did not include an optical disk reader or Ethernet port.[3] The magnesium case brings further weight reduction compared to metallic cases found on Apple's Macbook Pro.

Ports include a 3.5mm headphone jack, HDMI out, a single USB-C (Thunderbolt 3), and two USB 3.0. There is also a UFS/MicroSD combo port for additional storage.[6]

Reception[edit]

While major reviewers have yet to publish their official reviews of the North American version, early impressions note the impressive QLED display, a bright screen, and lightweight design.[7]

Initial reviewers on YouTube criticized unimpressive speakers, lack of a dedicated graphics card, and high price tag of $1299 for the 15" model. They praised the bright display, wireless Qi charger capability, and travel utility.[8] Unique features noted in various unboxing videos include the magnetic latch of the screen to hold the screen to the keyboard and a light-up DC adapter.[9]

Numerous users reported the challenge of removing the back casing on the 15" version, for the purpose of upgrading the SSD and RAM. Care must be taken to avoid stripping the small screws or bending the magnesium cover.[10]
