Samuel Themane Ramphele (born 22 June 1965)

Early life

childhood

Samuel Ramphele was born in 1965 in a small town of Krugersdorp in the Westrand in Paardekraal Hospital. His father was staying with his mother in a Railway compound next to Krugersdorp Train Station as his father was working for the Railway at the time. Samuel Ramphele was born within a family of six, three brothers and two sisters. Samuel Ramphele is the third of his brothers. At the age of 7, his father took him to an area next to Marble Hall where he had bought a plot in which they would stay and call it home. At that age, Samuel Ramphele was still not eligible for school as schools were far from where he was staying. So he would spend a lot of time looking after the cattle and goats as his father had plenty of cattle and goats. So at that time, going to school was not a priority as cattle were seen as the wealth that needed to be looked after.

Primary

Samuel Ramphele therefore started school at the age of 8 in 1973 and Samuel managed to continue until 1978 in standard 4 when Samuel Ramphele started to stop going to school without the knowledge of his parents. At this stage, Samuel and his friends would just pretend as if they were going to school but they were not, and this caused him to repeat standard 4 three times. In 1981, his parents started to realize that he was not going to school and they intervened, and that is when Samuel started to attend. It was during a time when Samuel started to get involved in love affairs and had his first girlfriend. There was an incident in which Samuel participated and the car of the principal of their school was burned, and Samuel was involved. The soldiers were called to their school and they had to run away. They were fortunate because they had finished writing their standard and I was playing for. Apart from football, Samuel was also very good in class and since Samuel Ramphele started in standard 6 Samuel Ramphele never came below number 5 in all terms and in all classes and I used to get awards for great achievement and managed to pass even standard 5 at the time.

High School

In 1984, his father decided to take him to his aunt who stayed in Potgietersrus in an area called Burgermberg, Mokopane to pursue high school studies. While Samuel Ramphele was there, Samuel managed to progress in all classes but could not finish to standard 9 and as Samuel Ramphele was to proceed to standard 10 there were riots in our school in 1987 and I was part of it. At that time there were political riots all over.

During the time when Samuel was still at Burgermberg, Mokopane, Samuel was a good football player and he received a lot of medals with the team. When Samuel reported the matter at home, his elder brother decided that he is not going back to Burgermberg, Mokopane as he was fearing that he would be arrested. He then took him and registered him to a school in Soweto, Meadowlands in 1988. Samuel attended at the school for three months and riots also erupted in that school and he participated. Police were looking for them so they had to go into hiding so my schooling during 1988 was also interrupted. In 1989 and 1990 Samuel could not study as he was part of young men who followed anti-apartheid activism in the Westland townships.

After School

In 1991 Samuel went to a special school for anti-apartheid activists in Braamfontein, Johannesburg to continue my studies. Samuel completed his matric in 1991 and proceeded to a pre University Khanya College in 1992. In 1993 Samuel went to Wits University and enrolled for a social science degree. Samuel dropped out in second year in 1994 due to the fact that I did not fulfill the requirement to proceed. Samuel then went to volunteer work at the Gauteng Legislature in 1995 and in 1996 he was appointed by Polokwane Municipality as Museum Outreach Officer.
