Samuel Jacob Somerville (born 6 August 1994) is an English-born Malaysian professional footballer who now plays as a goalkeeper for Penang FA.[1] Somerville attracts Malaysian attention due to his striking resemblance to well known Malaysian celebrity entrepreneur, Yang Hormat Dato' Sri Aliff Syukri bin Kamarzaman.[1][2][3]
Early life[edit]
Somerville's Malaysian heritage comes from his Kulim-born grandmother.[4] In 2018, Somerville was the only goalkeeper who was granted with Malaysian citizenship among 14 other players born overseas.[5]
Club information[edit]
Farnborough[edit]
Somerville made 13 appearances in the Conference South and came through the youth ranks in Farnborough.[6] His transfer to Godalming Town was announced in June 2012.[6]
Godalming Town[edit]
Due to his spectacular performance, he earned the number one jersey and signed on for the 'Gs' for the 2012/13 season.[7]
Slough Town[edit]
After Godalming Town, Somerville joined Slough in June 2013, upon the arrival of the new joint managers Neil Baker and Jon Underwood.[7] His first appearance was on 17 August 2013 during the match with Northwood and was able to maintain 15 league clean sheets in his first season at the club, and made it to the top 5 appearance makers for the season.[7] After a long contribution of 72 appearances for Slough, which includes the Play-Off at Kettering Town in May 2014, Somerville left the club in January in the following year.[7]
