Samurai Maiden (サムライメイデン) is a hack and slash video game developed by SHADE Inc. and published by D3 Publisher. It was released on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, on December 1, 2022, in Japan and December 8 internationally.

Gameplay[edit]

The player controls Tsumugi Tamamori, a Japanese high school student whisked away from modern day to Honno-ji in Sengoku era. There she meets the three kunoichi known as the Gokage. Helpful Iyo precocious Komimi and flirty Hagane help Tsumugi take on Nobunaga Oda, who has been reimagined as a villainous leader of an undead army. Tsumugi runs around and fights zombie samurai with her katana. The Gokage are not playable but can be switched out for one another and help out against enemies. Tsumugi can preform the "Devoted Heart Technique" which involes her becoming physically intimate with one of the Gokage. This provides a tremendous power boost to Tsumugi and encases her katana in fire (with Iyo), ice (with Komimi) or lightning (with Hagane).

Characters[edit]

Tsumugi Tamaori (玉織紬, Tamaori Tsumugi)
The game's protagonist and only playable character. Tsumugi is a Japanese high school student who excels at kendo to the point at her Grandfather wants her to succeed his dojo. Tsumugi uses her kendo practice to burn off calories from eating lots of foods, especially crepes. She is transported to the Sengoku period where she receives the help and earns the affections of the Gokage.

The Gokage[edit]

Iyo (依夜, Iyo)
Iyo is a Sengoku-era kunoichi who takes up the fight against Nobunaga alongside Tsumugi and the others. She soon grows very fond of and admires Tsumugi and refers to her as "Tsumugi Onee-sama ". Iyo specializes in ninja weaponry such as bombs and kunai. Iyo is rather clumsy and suffers from low-self esteem.
Hagane (刃鋼, Hagane)
Hagane is another member of the Gokage who allies with Tsumugi. Hagane is very open and forward with her affections towards Tsumugi. Hagane is a cyborg and has a large metallic arm. Hagane enjoys consuming oil, which is akin to alcohol for her. Her abilities are rooted in her cybernetics. Hagane is able to extend and electrify her arm for attacks and use her extended arm to carry Tsumugi across ravines. While bubbly and fun on the surface, at her core, she is a cynical woman.
Komimi (狐美魅, Komimi)
Komimi, like her comrades, is a Sengoku era ninja. Komimi is a both a technological genius as well as a master of Onmyōji magic. This has given her a confidence that some have mistaken for arrogance. Komimi has no sense of direction. She wields a giant hammer and ice orientated magic for attacks. Unlike the rest of the cast, she possesses ears and a tail.

Antagonists[edit]

Nobunaga Oda (織田信長, Oda Nobunaga)
The Demon King of the Sixth Heaven, He leads an undead army of samurai and has designs for world domination. It is him who gives Tsumugi her katana.
Shingen Takeda (武田信玄, Takeda Shingen)
Known as "The Tiger of Kai", Takeda Shingen has the appearance and personality of a young girl. She is still monstrously strong, however. Shingen refers to herself in the third person which is common for young Japanese girls.
Kenshin Uesugi (上杉謙信, Uesugi Kenshin)
Known as "The Dragon of Echigo", Uesugi Kenshin has the appearance of a young woman. She is no-nonsense and always gets straight to the point.
