Vidushi Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay is one of the leading Indian Classical vocalists and a rare musician to be trained in three most famous & celebrated Gharanas / Schools of music namely Lucknow, Patiala and Indore Gharana, from Chinmoy_Lahiri, Munawar_Ali_Khan ( the worthy son of Ustad Bade Ghulamali Khan) and Pandit Kamal Banerjee (one of the most authoritative disciple of Ustad Ameer Khan), following the legacy of the Great Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri, the Great Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali & the Great Ustad Amir Khan.

Early Life[edit]

She was born in a musical family where her father, the celebrated Tabla maestro and revered Guru Pandit Sankha Chatterjee, an exponent of Farukkabad and Punjab Gharana, groomed her in an atmosphere surrounded by legendary maestros like Ustad Keramattulla Khan, Ustad Allarakha Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit V.G.Jog, Pandit Kishen Maharaj, Ustad Zakir Hossain, Pandit Swapan Chowdhury to name a few. This grooming in the ambiance of celebrated maestros from a tender age enriched her music beyond her age. She is one of those rare Indian classical vocalist to have more than three octave voice range, with the ultimate soprano and gorgeous tonality.

Musical Journey[edit]

She has been performing in all leading classical conferences in India since 1983 like Harballav Sangeet Sabha, Saptak Music Festival, Tansen Sangeet Samaroha, Shankatmochan Festival, Dadar Matunga Festival, Kalidas Samaroha, Maharana Kumbha Samaroha, Bharat Bhavan Samaroha (ADDYA), Ameer Khan Sangeet Samaroha, Alladiakhan Khan Sangeet Samaroha, Samrat Festival, NCPA Music Festival, Vishnu Digambar Sangeet Samaroha, Pushkar Festival etc. She has extensively performed in Europe and North America also. She is the first Indian vocalist to be invited to perform at Son d'Hiver Festival Paris, Vision Jazz Festival New York, Gong Festival Torino, Beethoven Musik Festival Bonn, “LA VOCE” Vocal Festival Parma and World Women Vocalist Festival Geneva.

Needless to say that she is a Top grade musician of All India Radio, an established artist of ICCR, a first class Bachelor of Economics from Jadavpur University and Master in Music from Rabindra Bharati University.

Achievements[edit]

Sangeeta is a Gima Award Nominee for the Best Classical Album of the year 2013 for her album KHAYAL from SAREGAMA India limited. Her song "Prayer" has been featured in the album “The Greatest Songs Ever: India” by Petrol. She has collaborated with the famous World Musicians like WILLIAM PARKER, HAMID DRAKE, BILL COLE, ABBOS KOSSIMOV, Mohamed Reza, BURKHARDT KEHRING, JOCELYN B. SMITH, CHRISTIANE EVAN, RAMESH WEERATUNGA, PETER MICHAEL HAMEL to name a few. Double sunrise over Neptune" is one of her most acclaimed collaborative work with the famous American Jazz musician William Parker which received highly appreciative reviews in the world famous music journals like "Wire", "All about jazz" and so on. "Shruti","Bhakti", "Puja" and "Sangita" are her other world premier album releases. Her fusion numbers "Mother Earth" and "Morning Mantra" has reached the top ten chart of world music (Europe) and world jazz music (USA) in 1998 and 2008 respectively. Her bands namely In-diva jazz (Indo-jazz band) and Raag Rangeela (Hindustani and Carnatic jugalbandi band) has earned big accolades in the collaborative music world. Sangeeta is the first vocalist to initiate Indian Classical vocal in Italy through Cini Foundation IIMC Venice, where sitar & tabla was initiated by Pandit Ravishankar & Ustad Allarakha Khan. She has also pioneered Indian vocal masterclasses in Hochschule der Kunste Berlin, Jazz Institute Berlin, Hochschule fur Musik both Dressden and Hamburg, DePaul University Chicago, Bharatiya Vidya Bhaban UK for several years.

She has to her credit a twelve episode music appreciation course with the most famous school of classical music in Kolkata, namely ITC Sangeet Research Academy. She is the founder of SANGEET AMRITAM, an institution dedicated to the promotion of classical music legacy and musical crossover.
