Sanil Chawla is an American entrepreneur, computer programmer, and designer[6]. He is currently the Executive Director of the nonprofit organization Hack+.[1][4][5] In November 2018, he was announced as the youngest person to be honored on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Education.[1] He is of Indian descent.[7]
Early life[edit]
Chawla was born in Fremont, California, and spent his childhood and youth there, attending Mission San Jose High School[6]. His father, an angel investor, inspired him to explore entrepreneurship.[4]
In his childhood, Chawla co-founded several mock startups with friends[4], including TechyPeople, which "wrote blog articles about the latest tech, and developed basic software under the TechyPeople brand."[8]
Career[edit]
Hack+[edit]
In his sophomore year of high school, Chawla attempted to launch a startup to create websites. He found many financial and legal bottlenecks due to being under the legal age of majority.[4]
Chawla founded Hack+ to help provide legal infrastructure, financial services, and other resources for student-run startups and nonprofits.[4] Through Hack+, he has helped over 600 students launch over 50 organizations, with an estimated impact of over 50,000 students[9]. The organization is supported by over 100 companies, including Google, Amazon, and Facebook.[3][9][10]
srnd.org[edit]
Chawla works with srnd.org, a nonprofit organization that aims to increase diversity in computer science education.[11] He currently serves as a Senior Code Evangelist[12] and Global Growth Director[8], and has previously served as the Northern California Regional Manager from 2015 to 2017.[8]
