Major Sankalp Yadav, SM (29 March 1993 – 11 March 2022) was an officer of the Indian Army who was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal (Gallantry)[1][2] for his courage, devotion to duty, and sacrifice during a casualty evacuation mission when his helicopter crashed in Gurez.[3] [4] [5] [6] [7]
Early Life
Sankalp was born to Shri Surendra Kumar Yadav and Smt. Usha Yadav on 29 March 1993 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Sankalp and his older brother Rohish grew up in Jaipur's Nand Puri neighbourhood. He had his primary schooling at the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh Vidyalaya in Jaipur. At the Kapil Gyanpeeth (KGP-Mansarovar) School in Jaipur, he completed his 12th grade in 2011[8]. He was a good student who excelled in both academics and extracurricular activities.
Military Career
Despite the fact that no one in his family was a soldier, he had always had a desire to join the Indian Army. After finishing his education, he was eventually chosen to enrol in the National Defence Academy and joined the 126th NDA Course. After graduating from the NDA in 2014, he continued his training at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. In 2015, at the age of 22, he passed out as a Lieutenant and was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery. Thereafter, he completed his helicopter pilot training and joined the Army Aviation Corps in 2019.
Casualty Evacuation Mission
During 2022, Major Sankalp Yadav was serving in Jammu and Kashmir. On 11 March 2022, along with his captain, he was tasked with a casualty evacuation mission to evacuate an ailing BSF soldier from a forward post near the LOC in J&K. The forward post was located at a high altitude in a remote and inaccessible area. Major Sankalp Yadav and his captain took off for the mission as planned in a Cheetah helicopter. The mission was uneventful for the initial part but the helicopter lost communication contact after some time. The engine had malfunctioned and the aircraft became uncontrollable. It eventually crashed in Gurez sector in the Bandipora district. Major Sankalp Yadav and his captain were severely injured and were evacuated to Base Hospital at Srinagar. However, Major Sankalp Yadav later died from his injuries a few days before his 29th birthday. He was a professionally competent pilot who laid down his life at the age of 28 in the line of his duty. Honours and Legacy
To honour his sacrifice, a memorial has been built at the site where his helicopter crashed and a bust of Sankalp has been installed by his parent unit in the unit premises.
