The Saragossa Band[1] is a German pop band from Munich which was one of the most successful and busiest professional party bands in Germany from the late 1970s to around the mid-1980s. The group currently still performs.

History[edit]

The music of the Saragossa Band mixes pop with elements of calypso and samba and hit the nerve of the times in its early years. In 1984 they undertook a South Pacific tour.[2] To this day, the group still has numerous performances and plays mainly in countries like Romania, Hungary and Austria, and also at big festivals. From time to time the group can also be seen on television.

The group became known since 1977 when they released the song "Big Bamboo"[3], which is sung in the Caribbean Papiamentu dialect. "Rasta Man" and "Zabadak" followed, two songs with relatively limited lyrics that made it into the top ten of the German charts. Subsequently, the tracks "Ginger Red", "Agadou", "Aiko Aiko" failed to hit the charts in the top 10, but "Agadou" became the track with the greatest long-term impact and is the group's most-played song to date. The title is especially popular in beach bars and discos. In recent years there have been several cover versions of this title (including by Hot Banditoz, DD Company, La Boom, Black Lace or Proty Disco Kids). Founding member and songwriter Alfred Rudek died on July 20, 2018, at the age of 63.
